Chrono Trigger is frequently hailed as one of the best Japanese role-playing games ever created, and it’s hard not to concur with this sentiment. Remarkably, it still feels fresh and contemporary despite its age. Not just us, but Square Enix, during their 30th anniversary festivities, confirmed that the influential game has sold over five million copies worldwide.
The news from My Nintendo News revealed this by Square Enix themselves, hidden at the bottom of a festive blog post (originally written in Japanese). Over time, things have significantly evolved, and this fact is intriguing. Upon first seeing the figure, our initial response was astonishment. Given all the rave reviews the game has received throughout our lifetime, including our own contributions, the number appears rather old-fashioned.
In 2018, the latest data available, the game had sold approximately 3.5 million copies without counting PC sales. This is a considerably smaller number compared to a contemporary AAA game, and there’s debate over whether selling two million copies in two days indicates a flop. Given the massive disparity in budgets and expectations, it might be worth revisiting the golden era of 16-bit pixel art games, an epoch we wouldn’t mind returning to.
