Legendary Simpsons Composer Alf Clausen Passes Away at 84, Leaving a Musical Legacy

Today is a mournful day in Springfield, as Alf Clausen, the long-time composer of The Simpsons, passed away on May 29th at his home in Valley Village, Los Angeles. Clausen, who was 84 and won two Primetime Emmys for his composing work on the enduring Fox series, was a vital part of The Simpsons’ music for nearly three decades. Apart from his notable contributions to The Simpsons’ musical landscape, Clausen also gained recognition as a composer on the ’80s detective comedy series Moonlighting, featuring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd, and ALF.

As someone who’s always been captivated by the world of entertainment, I’ve got an intriguing story to share about a talented individual named Clausen. Several years ago, he was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, but that didn’t stop him from making a significant impact in the industry. In 1990, he became part of the phenomenal team behind “The Simpsons,” joining during its second season.

Working alongside lyricist Ken Keeler, Clausen created two Emmy-winning original songs for the show in 1997 and 1998 – “We Put the Spring in Springfield” and “You’re Checkin’ In (A Musical Tribute to the Betty Ford Center)”. Unfortunately, his journey with the beloved series didn’t have a fairy-tale ending. In 2017, he was dismissed from “The Simpsons,” leading him to file a lawsuit against Disney and Fox, claiming his termination was due to age discrimination and his health diagnosis.

After a long legal battle, Clausen finally reached a settlement in February 2022, bringing a conclusion to this chapter of his story. Despite the challenges he faced, his contributions to “The Simpsons” will always be remembered and celebrated by fans like me.

Simpson Producers Pay Tribute to Clausen’s Legacy

Regardless of the controversial departure he experienced from the series, the fictional Simpson family members shared their sympathies and sorrow on social media following Clausen’s passing.

Al Jean, a writer and executive producer on The Simpsons, conveyed his appreciation for Clausen’s work on the show via X.

RIP to Alf Clausen an incredibly talented man who did so much for @TheSimpsons

Additionally, the verified The Simpsons social media account paid homage to Clausen with a touching message that included a statement by co-creator Matt Groening highlighting the composer’s significant influence on the series.

Alf was known as the man of countless music cues – likely more than 10,000 over his decades working on The Simpsons. He was relentless, creative, and eager to take on any musical challenges we presented. I referred to him as our hidden strength. – Matt Groening

Back in 1998, I shared with Variety that working on The Simpsons was nothing short of a dream job for a composer like me. What made my success on the show? My unwavering focus on capturing the emotions of each character, rather than simply scoring the action on screen. With a career spanning over four decades, I’ve left an indelible mark in the television music community, and there’s no denying the impactful body of work I’ve created.

In my personal life, I leave behind my beloved wife Sally, my ex-wife Judy, my sister Faye, three children, two stepchildren, 11 grandchildren, one niece, and one nephew. They will forever cherish the memories we shared.
