In a more thoughtful exploration of Wolverine, titled Ultimate Wolverine, we’ve seen him portrayed as the mind-controlled Winter Soldier from Earth-6160. The pivotal moment unfolds in issue #6 of this series. Previously, readers witnessed an intense duel between Wolverine and Ultimate Sabretooth, ending with Wolverine defeated and captured by the Opposition. In this installment, we delve into a classic X-Men scene involving psychic combat, as Wolverine stirs from his unconscious state and grapples with his inner turmoil. Fortunately, he receives assistance from one of Marvel’s most powerful characters – Legion, the son of Professor X.
In this universe, Legion is not the character readers may be familiar with; we’ll discuss that in greater detail later on. Despite these differences, Legion manages to guide Wolverine through his darkest memories, providing him the fortitude to battle against the psychological manipulations inflicted upon him by the Eurasian Republic.
As a diehard Marvel fan, I must say that the enigmatic figure known as Legion is one of the most intriguing characters to grace the Marvel Universe. Born David Haller, son of future Israeli ambassador Gabrielle Haller, Legion’s life took an unusual turn due to his innate mental abilities and resulted in a multiple personality disorder, each persona possessing a distinct psychic power. This complex character posed a significant threat to our planet, forcing the X-Men into numerous confrontations with him.
Recently, Legion has been making a remarkable return to the Marvel Universe, with two significantly different iterations of the character surfacing. The Legion from Earth-6160 makes a pivotal move in Ultimate Wolverine #6, showcasing the immense potential this character has always held.
Legion Is Always a Wild Ride of a Character
In the realm of X-Men, Legion stands out as an intriguing character, and issue #6 of Ultimate Wolverine offers a unique take on him. His backstory unfolds in the data sections at the comic’s end, where it is established that this universe features a less renowned Xavier, and unbeknownst to all, Legion is his son from Earth-6160. Legion was discovered by the new Ultimate Beast during his hacking of the Eurasian Republic’s computer network. The Eurasian Republic held control over both Charles Xavier and Jean Grey, and they acquired Legion. It appears that at some point, his physical form perished, much like Xavier’s as shown in Ultimate X-Men #4. However, Legion’s consciousness found a way to inhabit the Eurasian computer systems. Beast and Legion developed a bond, enabling the mutant scientist to consolidate the fractured aspects of David’s psyche, scattered throughout the computer system. Instead of being Legion, David became One, transforming into a spectral presence for the Resistance. The Resistance discovered they could connect One with other minds through their computer system, which is what occurred in Ultimate Wolverine #6. Thanks to One’s divine powers, he retained his telepathic abilities and used them to free the ol’Canucklehead (Wolverine) from the Eurasian Republic’s control.
Among the intriguing portrayals of Legion, this one stands out as particularly unique. Over the past few years, Legion’s mental fragmentation has diminished significantly, mirroring the state of One on Earth-6160. In the Krakoa Era, he even played a pivotal role. Initially, Legion sparked the era known as The Age of Apocalypse, inadvertently killing his father while attempting to assassinate Magneto in the past. He also contributed to the events that led to The Age of X-Man, although these details are seldom discussed.
What’s fascinating is that this isn’t the only variant of Legion that fans are encountering currently. It was disclosed that Legion is the antagonist in Ms. Marvel’s time travel escapades with the X-Men, as depicted in the Giant-Size books released by Marvel. This version of Legion operates without David, with his other personalities taking charge. It’s thrilling to see how Marvel is reimagining Legion in unexpected ways, breathing new life into a character that is always entertaining and unpredictable.
One Has His Work Cut Out for Him
In my opinion, no character I’ve encountered matches the power of the Legion we know so far, seeming to be the main telepath in the Resistance. It was this being, whom I refer to as One, that helped Wolverine shatter the mental manipulation the Eurasians had imposed upon him, providing a game-changing asset for the rebels.
However, what makes me excited about One’s future role is the escalating conflict between the Resistance and the Eurasian Republic – particularly due to one significant detail: The Eurasian Republic holds control over Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force. This intriguing element could lead to some fascinating developments in the storyline as we move forward.
Jean’s link to the Eurasian computer networks exposes her to One, leaving readers curious about how this storyline will unfold. It seems that writer Chris Condon has been subtly laying the groundwork for future developments. The Opposition is likely to require every advantage they can find, and One could prove to be a crucial asset in their struggle.
