As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that the prospect of playing “Lego Horizon Adventures” has me more excited than a kid on Christmas morning! The fact that we can customize and control characters like Rost, Varl, Teersa, Erend, and even those mechanized dinosaurs is just the icing on the cake.
Horizon Adventures with Lego isn’t your typical Lego game; it boasts numerous unique features that set it apart as a superior current-generation version compared to The Skywalker Saga. Notably, different studios are responsible for the game’s development, with Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo stepping in after Traveler’s Tales. Here are 15 essential points you should consider before purchasing Lego Horizon Adventures when it releases on November 14.
First PlayStation Exclusive Franchise To Come to a Nintendo Console in 26 Years
Legos aren’t only used to construct toy bridges; they also seem to bridge the often difficult divide known as console exclusivity. For instance, Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series has been a cornerstone of Sony’s PlayStation brand, exclusive to its hardware until now. However, Lego Horizon Adventures isn’t the first PlayStation exclusive IP to venture into a competitor’s territory; back in 1998, the PlayStation’s Wipeout series had an exclusive entry on Nintendo 64 with Wipeout 64. Interestingly, Microsoft has been promoting multiplatform releases lately, such as Hi-Fi Rush on PS5. Yet, surprisingly, Lego Horizon Adventures doesn’t follow this trend, being available exclusively on the PS5, Switch, and PC.
Most Cinematic and Graphically Rich Lego Game Yet
In their quest to make the game feel like a live-action Lego movie, developers at Guerrilla and Studio Gobo ensured that every in-game object resembles real Lego bricks, similar to how “The Lego Movie” was presented. This comprehensive brick-built design surpasses previous Lego games by including Lego bricks even in the background environments, a feature often omitted for technical reasons. The characters move around with the distinctive stop-motion animation of Lego figures, complete with realistic scratches and scuffs. This visually appealing package gives the impression that you’re playing with a real Lego set. To enhance the cinematic experience, the game features a fully voiced cast, with Ashly Burch reprising her role as Aloy.
A Family-Friendly Re-Imagining of Horizon Zero Dawn
In creating Lego’s version of the Horizon franchise, the developers have tailored it more for a younger audience by eliminating some of the grim, post-apocalyptic elements seen in the original Horizon Zero Dawn. The narrative director at Guerrilla Games explains that while this isn’t a direct adaptation or parody, it does retain the signature humor and cleverness found in other Lego games. You can anticipate the classic physical comedy and smart dialogue, but all set within the world and time period of Horizon Zero Dawn. A key aspect of Lego adaptations is their knack for making lighthearted jokes and visual gags that reference popular culture, and this trend continues in Lego Horizon Adventures.
Customizable Mother’s Heart Base
As a fan, one way I like to personalize my gaming experience is by customizing bases. The heart of the game, reminiscent of Mother’s Heart from Zero Dawn, serves as our central hub. This base isn’t just aesthetically pleasing and Lego-inspired, it’s also adaptable! You can rearrange it with various building attachments and props. For instance, you could place a real-life 3-in-1 Ferris Wheel atop different structures, and I bet there are hundreds more clever references hidden within for us to discover!
No Stud Counter
In the new game, “Lego Horizon Adventures”, a significant change is the absence of the stud counter, which was a common feature in previous Lego games. Critics have mentioned this omission, as well as the more relaxed approach to earning ranks such as “true adventurer” by breaking everything into studs. However, there are still numerous activities and side missions to engage in beyond just collecting studs.
Can Customize Minifigs with Unique Outfits
Among the various collectibles found in the game are clothing options for your minifigure characters to don. A diverse selection of outfit combinations, spanning from Lego’s Ninjago and City lines to costumes from Sony’s mascots like Ratchet, Rivet, and Sackboy, have been displayed in trailers. This is exciting news for fans of the series, as Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga removed character customization entirely. It will be particularly enjoyable to showcase our unique designs with friends during co-op play.
2-Player Online and Couch Co-Op
It’s great news that the smooth drop-in/drop-out cooperative mode from previous Lego games reappears in this one, but with a condition: Cooperation is limited to just two players, as seen in Skywalker Saga. We’ve been hoping for a return to four-player cooperation, but unfortunately, that’s not the case here. However, online co-op is available, unlike in Skywalker Saga. Additionally, local cooperative play on the couch remains, but now it uses a single adaptable screen to display the action. If you value the independence that split-screen offers, like me, there’s a helpful feature to ensure your partner doesn’t get lost off-screen.
Fixed Overhead Camera Angle Like the Classic Lego Games
For this game, there’s a new camera perspective – moving from the over-the-shoulder view to an overhead, fixed angle. This change provides a broad playing field that allows you to easily observe everything at a glance. Since split-screen is not available, having a single fixed camera makes more sense. In my experience, Lego games function more smoothly with this fixed camera approach. However, parents have pointed out that the rapid, close-up view in games like “Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga” and “Lego Ninjago” can lead to nausea and visual confusion for younger players.
Many Characters To Control and Unlock
Building on collaborations with other brands, Lego offers a unique pleasure by transforming cherished characters into minifigures. Fans eagerly anticipate this for the ‘Horizon’ series, as iconic figures such as Rost, Varl, Teersa, and Erend will be fully playable and customizable. I can hardly wait to discover if they include playable mechanized dinosaurs too!
Simplified Weak-Spot Targeting System
When it comes to battling fierce dinosaurs, you’ll employ a system that targets their weak spots, much like in the game Horizon Zero Dawn. However, to make it more user-friendly, the controls are streamlined for a single Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller. It’s gratifying to see this key feature adapted here, even if all you need to do is press and hold an aim button on a glowing spot.
Strategic Elements Such as Sneaking in Grass
In the game of Lego Horizon Adventures, it’s still important to move through tall vegetation stealthily and make use of your surroundings for strategic purposes. You can ignite the Lego-style tall grass, which not only helps in confusing beasts but also solves intricate puzzles. Let’s face it, when sneaking around together, there’s always someone who enjoys adding a little mischief by setting their partner ablaze while hidden among the high grass!
Difficulty Slider
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that as I crank up the difficulty, the game becomes more strategically demanding and intricate. In simpler terms, increasing the challenge seems to replace auto-aim with free aim, and the AI enemies become more aggressive. However, remember this is still a Lego game, designed for a younger audience, so it doesn’t aim to replicate the strategic depth of its inspirational giant, Horizon Zero Dawn.
PC Minimum and Recommended Requirements
The PC specs to run Horizon Adventures have been revealed and you’ll need at least an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor to run it at its lowest settings and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics card. The recommended processors are Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600As with the recommended graphics cards being NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800. Sadly, yes, a PlayStation account is necessary for online play.
File Size
Compared to a PC, The Switch has a significantly smaller storage demand, needing just 5.9 GB for its Nintendo system. On the other hand, a PC requires about 30 GB. As for the PlayStation, we don’t know its file size requirement yet, but it’s likely to be similar to the PC, around 30 GB, based on past comparisons.
Story Takes 7 to 8 Hours, According to the Director
Engrossing oneself in all that data forms the core and main course of the game: its narrative. The creative director has approximated that this narrative spans roughly 7 to 8 hours, which falls within the typical range for a Lego game. However, due to the intricate graphical elements such as fully brick-built environments, a significant portion of that playtime is dedicated to rendering a more dynamic and high-resolution experience compared to previous Lego games.
