LEGO Horizon Adventures Won’t “Lean on” Some of Horizon Zero Dawn’s Darker Story Elements

As a long-time fan of both the Horizon series and LEGO games, I’m excited about the upcoming release of LEGO Horizon Adventures. The prospect of exploring the rich world of Horizon Zero Dawn through the LEGO lens is an intriguing one, but I was curious about how the developers would handle the game’s darker elements, given its younger audience.

In simpler terms, LEGO Horizon Adventures aims to expand the popularity of the Horizon series beyond PlayStation by releasing on Nintendo Switch. Moreover, its LEGO theme targets a younger demographic compared to the main Horizon games. However, since the story of Horizon Zero Dawn involves some dark and apocalyptic elements, how will LEGO Horizon Adventures adapt it for a younger audience?

During an interview with GamesIndustry, James Windeler, the narrative director at Guerrilla, discussed the creative freedom they are taking with the story of “LEGO Horizon Adventures.” He revealed that some of the darker aspects of “Horizon Zero Dawn’s” narrative will be either eliminated or downplayed in the upcoming “LEGO” title. Additionally, Windeler emphasized that the overall tone of “LEGO Horizon Adventures” will be significantly lighter than its source material.

He explained that they had made every effort to include as much of the original story as possible. However, some elements were challenging for an eight-year-old audience, such as the destruction of the old world. Therefore, they found ways to maintain those themes while keeping the story accessible. The devastating revelations from the first game, like the deceased corporate masterminds, are not present in this version.

As a devoted fan, I can tell you that the initial game holds some powerful emotional moments which we’ve managed to recreate authentically, yet balanced them with humor to keep things lively. These elements are deeply embedded, not just superficial. This simplified take still resonates strongly with the original.

Windeler mentioned that although the tone in LEGO Horizon Adventures will vary from the primary Horizon series, the essential characters stay true to their original selves. He attributed this consistency to the return of several original voice actors.

He insisted, “The experience must retain its distinct Horizon charm.” Though we’ve significantly deviated from the norms, our characters remain true to their essential selves. With a fine blend of innovation and familiarity, we’ve achieved a remarkable balance. We’re fortunate to have Ashley Burch reprising her role as Aloy, and JB Blanc as Rost. Their enthusiasm shines through in their performances, making the new feel both distinct and recognizable. They’ve embraced the change and contributed significantly to our project.

The game LEGO Horizon Adventures is expected to be launched this holiday season on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. However, a definitive release date has not been disclosed as of now.
