Lennie James Hopes Mr Loverman Sparks Important Conversations About Older Queer Black Couples

Lennie James expresses his hope that the representation of an older, queer Black couple in Mr Loverman, portrayed by him and Ariyon Bakare (who both won awards at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards), will initiate discussions following its presentation.

At the winners’ press conference, James, who had been awarded Best Leading Actor, was inquired about the significance of the production that portrayed a queer Black pair as its central characters.

In response, James said, “They’re an unusual older black couple, too,” he added. “I believe this is significant because I think the narrative becomes even less common when it involves not only queer individuals but also a racially diverse couple.

He mentioned: “I wish this encourages discussions not only among the general public but also specifically in our community – May a program you found engaging inspire conversations that allow individuals to express themselves genuinely, not just with their families but also within their communities.

Mr. Loverman centers around 74-year-old Barrington “Barry” Walker (James), an engaging Londoner of Antiguan descent. After years of hiding his sexual identity, he chooses to part ways with his longtime spouse and embark on a new life openly with Morris (Bakare) – his cherished childhood friend, who has been by his side all along.

Last October, when the series first aired, its creator, Bernardine Evaristo, revealed that earlier she had been informed that the story was considered too specialized or limited in appeal to attract viewers on screen due to her novel being its basis.

In conversation with BBC News, Evaristo commented: “Perhaps others considered it a questionable market prospect, possibly not anticipating its appeal. Someone referred to it as a ‘triple niche’ due to my being Black, elderly, and homosexual.

She added: “They wouldn’t express that view today… as times have evolved. We’ve become far more accepting and forward-thinking, and I hope this trend continues.
