Lenovo isn’t hesitant when it comes to crafting distinctive PC and laptop designs, showcasing this at CES 2025 with the unveiling of “the world’s first rollable display AI PC” – the ThinkBook Plus (Gen 6) Rollable. This innovative device is a culmination of an idea we glimpsed a few years back and quickly progressed to a functional prototype. In person, it looks even more impressive, as our team had the chance to view the completed product during its exhibition in Las Vegas.
I’m sorry, but you can’t roll your laptop up like a yoga mat. However, you have the ability to enlarge its screen whenever you desire. The ThinkBook Plus (Gen 6) has a unique feature that makes it appear like any standard 14-inch laptop from the business- and creator-focused brand. But what sets it apart is that its 14-inch display can be extended up to 16.7 inches with just a button press or a hand gesture.
It might seem like a trick to many that this extremely tall vertical screen is just a gimmick, but after reviewing ASUS’ ZenBook DUO in 2024, I quickly became its advocate. When you have enough workspace, whether permanent or temporary, having a dual-stacked Windows 11 desktop setup feels as intuitive as any side-by-side monitor arrangement. Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 even removes the middle divide between each screen, further enhancing the experience.
Personally, I can’t help but feel exhilarated at the prospect of Lenovo ditching the monotonous E-ink screen on its ThinkBook Plus Gen 4. Although it aligns with the series’ reputation for innovative, slightly unconventional features, it’s refreshing to see Lenovo embracing cutting-edge technology that could potentially redefine the category in a distinctive manner.
The company’s announcement suggests that the rollable version of their product promotes better posture by lessening strain for those working extended hours, which is likely accurate. However, it may not initially appeal to most users as its primary selling point seems to be stylishness. As usual, the ThinkBook series is designed with business users in mind who require flexibility and productivity while on-the-go, but I personally find it appealing for my leisure activities during off-hours.
What about the specs?
The moment I look over the technical details of the rollable ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, my initial curiosity starts to fade, and it becomes more evident that this device is primarily designed for business use. Although I wasn’t hoping for cutting-edge graphics from NVIDIA’s latest lineup, finding out that it only has two USB-C ports (which support Thunderbolt 4) is a bit underwhelming. If you want to connect additional devices or monitors, you might need to use a docking station or USB-C cables with DisplayPort compatibility instead of HDMI, but these are often found in creative environments.
Lenovo might refer to the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 as “AI-equipped Copilot+ PC”, given its incorporation of AI-enhanced features like Lenovo AI Now and Cocreator from Paint, made possible by its selection of Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors featuring built-in Neural Processing Units (NPUs) for local AI processing. This feature is increasingly common in contemporary devices, but it’s particularly beneficial for a tool designed for professional creators. Anticipated to debut in Q1 2025, this device doesn’t come at an entry-level price, with a starting cost of $3,499.
