Lewis Capaldi Details “Mental Episode” That Led to Him “Convulsing”

Lewis Capaldi is getting candid about his mental health.

The singer of “Someone You Loved” shared insights into the reasons behind his multi-year break from music. For Lewis Capaldi, who has been candid about his battles with Tourette syndrome, the decision to withdraw from his career stemmed from a difficult “mental health incident” that happened during a performance in Chicago.

On Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, Capaldi shared that due to a severe case of stage fright backstage, he couldn’t return to finish the song. In simpler terms, he said that he had an unexpected panic attack while off-stage and was unable to rejoin for the performance.

He continued, “It was really, really bad.”

During the same year’s Glastonbury Festival, Capaldi encountered a comparable situation, which prompted the audience to join in a spontaneous chorus to assist him in wrapping up his act.

The 28-year-old revealed that at the time it occurred and while it was unfolding, it felt like the most difficult point in my life. It was truly awful.

In my professional opinion as a lifestyle guide, I must admit to feeling a certain sense of relief in that moment. To put it simply, it was a sigh of relief knowing that everything would be okay from then on. I could finally seek help and work on myself for the next couple of years.

Initially, he avoided the limelight, but in June, he reappeared on stage at Glastonbury. Reflecting now, the “Before You Go” singer considers his stage freeze-up as “the most beneficial thing that has ever occurred to me.
