It was reported by Telemundo that Liam Payne passed away at the age of 31 in Argentina on October 16, 2024. The Emergency Medical Care System (SAME) confirmed this sad news.

According to reports from Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14, the singer fell fatally from a balcony on the third floor of a hotel in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires where he was residing. An autopsy revealed that Payne died due to multiple injuries and internal and external bleeding caused by the fall. Although the investigation is ongoing as there’s no clear cause of death, it appears that Payne was alone at the time of the incident and may have been experiencing a relapse related to substance abuse issues. In a previous video shared on YouTube in July 2023, Payne discussed his struggle with sobriety, mentioning that he had attended treatment for approximately 100 days and had abstained from alcohol for about six months.

The autopsy results indicated that Payne suffered 25 injuries consistent with those caused by a fall from a significant height. These injuries were severe enough to cause his death, while additional internal and external bleeding in the skull, chest, abdomen, and limbs contributed to the overall cause of death.

Forensic experts examining the former One Direction member found no signs of defensive injuries or any that suggested third-party involvement. However, questions remained about Payne’s condition prior to the fall.

The prosecution stated that since the body was left in a specific position and the fall injuries were present, it is presumed that Payne did not attempt to protect himself and may have fallen into a semi- or unconscious state.

Medical examiners are continuing their investigation by requesting histopathological, biochemical, and toxicological studies. They are analyzing the contents of Payne’s stomach, alcohol and toxins in his blood, vitreous humor, bile, nasal swab, and urine to determine the presence of alcohol and toxins.

Preliminary toxicology results showed that Payne had drugs in his system at the time of his death, according to an informed source speaking to The New York Times.

According to a press release by Argentina’s public prosecutor on November 7th, a toxicology analysis found traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant in his system.

The authorities do not think his death was a suicide, as suggested in a November 7 press release from Argentina’s public prosecutor. They stated that the victim may not have been fully aware when he fell, making it unlikely that his actions were intentional or conscious. Additionally, Judge Laura Bruniard of the National Criminal and Correctional Court No. 34 also mentioned in a December 30 press release that it’s possible Payne, due to his state at the time, might have attempted to leave his room from the balcony and fallen accidentally.

According to the account given by prosecutors, the statement on October 17 suggested that Payne might have fallen from the balcony of his third-floor room at CasaSur Palermo hotel around 5:07 local time. Earlier, the hotel had contacted emergency services for assistance due to a guest who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, causing damage to some items in the room.

Upon arrival by SAME and officers from the 14B Neighborhood Police Station, they found that Payne had already fallen off his balcony and died instantly due to the gravity of his injuries.

Upon searching the room, police found substances suspected to be narcotics and alcoholic drinks, although it was noted that confirmation from experts was still pending at the time. The statement also mentioned various destroyed objects and furniture in the room.

Authorities investigated who else might have been in the room before Payne’s fall, with the statement noting that five statements were taken from three hotel staff members and two women who had spent time with the musician in his room but left the hotel when the incident occurred.

The prosecution stated that their investigation not only aimed to clarify the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death, but also to examine if any third parties could have played a role in events leading up to Payne’s demise.

In an emergency call made to local authorities, a hotel staff member asked for help due to a guest who was heavily under the influence of drugs and alcohol. “This guest becomes destructive when conscious,” the caller explained. “He’s wrecking the entire room. We really need you to send someone over, please.” The employee also conveyed additional worry, stating, “We require immediate assistance because I’m not sure if he’s in danger. The guest is staying in a room with a balcony, and we’re somewhat concerned that he might do something potentially harmful.” It was not mentioned by the caller that the guest was Payne; NBC News attempted to get comment from his representative but did not receive a response.

Argentina’s public prosecutor announced on November 7 that three individuals are facing charges for alleged illegal activities, as stated in a press release translated from Spanish. The first accused is the individual who was with the artist daily during his stay in Buenos Aires, and they have been charged with the crimes of abandonment resulting in death. A hotel employee is the second defendant, who must answer to two proven instances of supplying cocaine to Liam Payne while he was at the hotel. The third accused, also a drug supplier, has been charged for two other clear-cut instances of providing drugs on October 14 during separate occasions.

Initially, it was thought that no one was held accountable in the case. However, further investigation led to the charging of five individuals. According to Argentina’s prosecutor’s office press release on Dec. 30, the hotel manager Gilda Martin, receptionist Esteban Grassi, Payne’s representative Roger Nores, a hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra, and a waiter Braian Paiz were implicated. The first three were charged with negligent homicide while the latter two were accused of drug trafficking. It was later clarified that RLN was charged with a different criminal offense instead of abandonment. Nores, speaking to the Daily Mail, denied abandoning Payne and asserted he wasn’t his manager.

According to a statement released by the prosecutor’s office on November 7, extensive and thorough investigations were conducted to understand the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death. This included obtaining numerous testimonies from hotel staff, family members, friends, medical professionals, biochemists, and psychiatrists.

The investigation also involved analyzing over 800 hours of video footage from security cameras in the hotel and nearby public roads. Moreover, a detailed forensic examination of Payne’s cell phone was carried out to review his calls, messages, conversations on messaging apps, and social media interactions.

Additionally, data from several gigabytes of other cell phones, such as those belonging to the hotel reception and witnesses who willingly provided them, were extracted and examined to support their statements. The investigation also looked into records of guests and orders at the hotel bar/restaurant to identify who visited Payne and what they consumed.

Furthermore, nine searches were conducted at homes in Buenos Aires as part of the investigation.

Yet, the statement issued on November 7 mentioned that the investigation needs to carry on because there are remaining tasks, such as unlocking the victim’s damaged netbook and other confiscated devices during the probe, which are yet to be completed.

Payne was vacationing with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, in Argentina before his unfortunate demise. Photos and videos from his Snapchat account depicted the couple enjoying their time together, discussing horseback riding plans, and having a wonderful day in Argentina, as seen in screenshots obtained by NBC News. The last picture he posted on Snapchat that day was of him and Cassidy wearing swimsuits.

Previously, they had announced on social media that Cassidy was returning to Florida to be with their dog Nala while Payne remained in Argentina.

Cassidy stated in a video on October 14th that she was eager to return home from South America, admitting her discomfort with prolonged stays in one place. Originally planning to stay for five days, they ended up being there for two weeks, which left her yearning to go back home.

Following Payne’s demise, Cassidy conveyed her feelings of being “completely lost” and how the past few days felt surreal.

In a post on October 18th, she expressed her love for Liam, calling him her “angel.” She wanted him to know that she loved him without conditions and fully, promising to continue loving him throughout her life. She concluded by saying, “I love you, Liam.

Following Liam Payne’s demise, his One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan publicly expressed their sorrow. In a joint Instagram post on October 17th, they wrote, “We are utterly devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. As time goes by and everyone is ready, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our beloved brother.”
