In contrast to the Soulslike genre, which is leaning towards multiplayer experiences with Elden Ring: Nightreign from FromSoftware, Lies of P’s director Jiwon Choi has expressed that his team doesn’t feel compelled to transition into online multiplayer.
During an interaction at GDC 2025 with Eurogamer, Choi expressed that playing Elden Ring: Nightreign inspired Neowiz to strive for excellence in creating the forthcoming Overture expansion. This enthusiasm arose from observing FromSoftware venture beyond its typical realm to endeavor in offering a more conventional multiplayer experience.
Choi commented, “I found [Nightreign] incredibly revitalizing and innovative.” This led me to believe that they are skilled developers who consistently challenge themselves, use their creativity, and have a clear vision. As a result, I was inspired to make the [Overture] experience as exceptional as possible.
Choi discussed that with the launch of the “Overture” expansion, Neowiz aims to enhance “Lies of P” in virtually every facet. The team has incorporated much of what they discovered during the creation of the original game into the DLC, aiming to create a more enjoyable experience. Moreover, Choi hinted that Neowiz might venture into developing a multiplayer title in the future.
From the inception of this game, our main objective was to create a top-notch, solo-play action game of exceptional quality. We drew on valuable insights from the original version and made every effort to incorporate those enhancements. This expansion serves as the culmination of our learning process.
As for our plans for the future, we’re absolutely receptive to any suggestions or opportunities that may come up later on.
In terms of advancing the Soulslike genre, Choi expressed that Neowiz prefers not to speculate about its future direction. Instead, their primary goal is to realize their own creative vision. Moreover, Choi encourages fans of “Lies of P” to view Neowiz as a signifier of quality and diversity, rather than limiting their games to just one or two genres.
Choi stated, “We’ve talked a lot about this topic among ourselves,” he said. Instead of guessing what the Soulslike genre might become in the future, our team is dedicated to finding our unique style and identifying the elements that will draw players in. We aim to develop our own game that caters specifically to our customers’ preferences. In doing so, we believe we can establish trust and credibility with our fanbase.
In the future, we aspire for our audience to recognize our distinctive elements rather than pigeonholing us into a specific genre. This way, they will anticipate these unique aspects in our upcoming works, viewing them as an extension of our growth and character development.
The game titled “Lies of P: Overture” is being worked on at the moment for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. As of now, there’s no specific date set for its release, but it’s expected to come out during the summer season of 2025.
