I successfully played the prequel DLC for Overture, set in the captivating, sprawling, and enchanting universe of Lies of P. This soulful Pinocchio-inspired Soulslike game immerses players deeply, offering a fascinating world to delve into.
Straight from the starting line, the scene unfolded as a frosty, enchanting winter landscape brimming with confusion and fresh discoveries. I tested out two demos; one highlighting three fresh bosses, while another delved into an entirely novel part of the game, known as Krat Zoo.
Experiencing numerous deaths against both bosses and common foes, discovering various notes along the way, it was delightful to return to the endearing universe of Lies of P, a game that has already captured our hearts so deeply, embracing its aesthetic charm and somewhat enigmatic inhabitants.
Memories, matches, and difficulty level
In both demonstrations, I observed a significant shift in the gameplay that some players may find either delightful or disdainful. The initial major alteration will be the release of an updated base game version, which introduces two additional difficulty levels for Lies of P: “Butterfly’s Guidance” and “Awakened Puppet”.
If you’re seeking a narrative-rich journey, this game provides ample opportunity for immersion, giving you room to savor the world at your own pace with minimal hardships. The traditional challenging mode, reminiscent of the toughness we’ve grown accustomed to from the original version, is now referred to as “Legendary Stalker”. (I, as an observer, am suggesting this rephrasing.)
In the upcoming updates, we’ll introduce an exciting new feature called Battle Memories. This allows players to engage in battles against bosses they’ve previously encountered. You’ll be able to advance through five levels of difficulty, with the first three accessible immediately and tiers four and five becoming available once you’ve successfully completed the lower tiers.
In my analysis, what we call “Deathmatch” presents a unique challenge. Here, I’m tasked to face off against a succession of bosses who have already been defeated by me. The twist is that both my health and the items at my disposal are restricted in this mode. It’s a test of strategy, skill, and resourcefulness, as I navigate through this intense battle sequence with limited resources.
Overture creates a space for all play styles
In my interaction with Overture, I found myself juggling tasks within the given timeframe while simultaneously identifying potential concerns that users might have upon embarking on this Downloadable Content (DLC).
From the very start, it’s clear that there’s significantly more content in the stories and instructions provided in the demo, as well as areas for players to discover and explore. With the introduction of new difficulty settings, Battle Memories, Death Matches, and a brand-new weapon – a bow and arrow – Overture is providing gamers with greater liberty to tailor their gameplay experience according to their preferences.
Neowiz isn’t attempting to mimic FromSoftware, yet their Soulslike game stands out as one of the most authentic within the genre I’ve encountered. However, it maintains its unique identity in the way it’s delivered to the player. Crafting a challenging game is impressive, but recognizing that not everyone might want to play such a game shows thoughtfulness.
In comparison to other Souls-like games such as Elden Ring and its DLC, P’s deception is among the most user-friendly. Introducing various difficulty settings could attract a larger player community. The boss fights in my initial playthrough were an intense test even for those seeking the highest difficulty, and I eagerly anticipate players witnessing the stunning visuals they display.
In the updated version of the game, it’s crucial to approach battles thoughtfully, as the bosses move at a brisk pace and some enemy hit areas are expansive. Due to the modifications made to both new bosses and common foes, you should strategize your attacks more than in the original game. The enemies now have extended reach and pack a harder punch when set to maximum difficulty.
Playing on PC had its pros and cons

I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the demos of Overture and got a glimpse into its world, primarily using my PC. Overall, it was a good experience, but there were some aspects that I hope will be addressed and improved in the future.
During my gaming session, I alternated using both the controller and the mouse-keyboard setup, and found no performance problems while controlling with the controller. However, when using the mouse-keyboard combination, the game occasionally lagged slightly whenever I switched between the two control methods and the controller input.
After approximately 20 minutes into gameplay, it became steady, and the experience became seamless thereafter. However, please bear in mind that this could have been an individual problem I encountered while playing Overture on my PC, as you navigate between a mouse/keyboard and a controller.
As a researcher, I found the gaming experience on PC quite seamless, apart from the mentioned hiccup. Regrettably, time constraints prevented me from delving deeper into exploring various controls, particularly those associated with the bow and arrow. However, based on my initial interaction, it appears to be an engaging feature that promises a fun-filled gaming experience for many players.
In my opinion, the game Lies of P appears to be designed with a controller in mind rather than a mouse and keyboard setup.
Prepare to die… but in a fun way
There’s nothing I enjoy more than discovering a fresh narrative and universe within an established one. The game “Lies of P” offers a stunningly beautiful setting with cascading blues, purples, and captivating lore that creates a thrilling sensation as it collapses dramatically.
Whether you’re a novice or an experienced player, there’s a good chance you’ll find Lies of P delightful with its new additions to the game. It’s evident that Neowiz prioritizes its players, as shown by their ongoing efforts to enrich an already rich gaming experience.
Delving into the icy terrain of Krat Zoo, to face fresh adversaries, even a chilling alligator boss (shivers), Lies of P: Overture guarantees an immersive journey that will both challenge and captivate players in the most thrilling manner.
