Life is Strange: Double Exposure — Why we're particularly hyped for the return of this supernatural murder mystery

As someone who has been following the Life is Strange series since its inception back in 2015, I can say without a doubt that the announcement of Life is Strange: Double Exposure at the June Xbox Games Showcase 2024 was a momentous occasion. Max Caulfield’s journey has always been one close to my heart, and I am thrilled to see her story continue in this latest installment.

Initially, we believed that Max Caulfield’s tale had concluded – a choice made at the climax of Life is Strange in 2015 seemed to be the final chapter. However, our anticipation was revived during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, as it was announced that Max Caulfield’s narrative persists in the upcoming Life is Strange: Double Exposure! I, for one, am eagerly looking forward to witnessing Max in her matured state, and let me explain why.

Why we’re excited

As a tech-savvy enthusiast, let me share my excitement about the recent revelation during the June Xbox Games Showcase: Deck Nine and Square Enix unveiled the upcoming installment in the Life is Strange series titled Double Exposure. This captivating sneak peek left fans in awe as it revealed returning protagonist Max Caulfield grappling with the challenge of either solving or preventing her friend’s tragic murder.

In “Life is Strange: Double Exposure,” Max Caulfield, the young woman with the unique ability to manipulate time, continues her story from the first game. Previously, Max could only rewind small moments of time. However, it seems that her powers have evolved in this sequel, allowing her to access and enter alternate timelines to influence past events and alter their outcomes.

As a tech-savvy enthusiast, I recall a fleeting glimpse into an alternate reality during the first season of Life is Strange, when we caught a sneak peek at what might have been if Chloe’s father hadn’t perished that fateful day. However, the depth and intensity of this time loop phenomenon that we’re witnessing now seems to surpass anything I experienced back then.

For Life is Strange fans, this new concept holds great appeal as it may provide an opportunity to delve into the repercussions and results of their decisive moment from the initial game: Did you choose to save Chloe or sacrifice Arcadia Bay? It’s all good; I opted for saving Chloe myself.

The game’s chief director, Jonathan Stauder, has revealed that the upcoming installment of Life is Strange, titled Double Exposure, will acknowledge both previous endings. However, neither ending holds official status as canonical.

1. Strauer stated, “Our book for the first game doesn’t have a definitive ending. In Double Exposure, Max’s thoughts, journal entries, text messages, interactions with characters, and decisions about disclosing her past to her new acquaintances will all be influenced by the choice she makes in the end.”

Life is Strange: Double Exposure — Why we're particularly hyped for the return of this supernatural murder mystery

As a fervent fan of Life is Strange myself, I’ve been caught up in the buzz surrounding the enigmatic character of Rachel Amber. Ever since the Double Exposure announcement trailer and the Extended Gameplay video dropped, there’s been a palpable excitement among series aficionados. The tantalizing sight of a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Rachel and shares her voice has ignited speculation. Could this be an alternate universe where Rachel didn’t perish? Or perhaps she wasn’t dead in the original storyline at all? Given that Rachel was seemingly the only other character with some sort of power in the initial games, it raises intriguing questions about what role she might play. The future will reveal the answers to our burning curiosities.

Take a look at the Extended Gameplay trailer below:

One notable observation from watching the Extended Gameplay trailer is the impressive visual quality of the game. This installment may outdo its predecessors, including the acclaimed True Colors, with its stunningly detailed characters and environments, breathtaking night sky, and meticulously crafted atmosphere that seamlessly blends all elements together.

Based on my analysis of the gameplay footage, the core mechanics seem remarkably similar to what we’ve seen before, which is reassuring. It seems that players will have more opportunities for exploration akin to True Colors, but they will still be guided along a set path. In contrast to True Colors, though, Life is Strange: Double Exposure has reverted to an episodic format – something I’m personally thrilled about. Additionally, the choice-driven narrative remains intact, promising various conclusions based on our decisions. I can hardly contain my excitement to see how these choices unfold.

The part of Life is Strange: Double Exposure that I’m most excited about, in my opinion, is its music. Known for their moving and impactful tunes, the Life is Strange games have left me yearning for their songs long after I’ve finished playing. In fact, I still frequently listen to the original game’s soundtrack.

In the Extended Gameplay trailer, we get a tantalizing glimpse into the game’s offerings. The included song piques my interest immensely, and I’ve spent hours online attempting to identify its title – unfortunately, with no success yet. The melody beautifully sets the stage for what lies ahead.
