Like a Dragon Director Says Project Century Speculation Entirely Wrong

Well now, I reckon as a seasoned gamer with a knack for history, I’d say Project Century is shaping up to be quite the intriguing adventure! Ever since I got my hands on the first Like a Dragon game back in ’96, I’ve been hooked on RGG Studios and their masterful blend of storytelling and historical settings.

With this new title set in 1915 Japan, I can’t help but think we’re in for another immersive journey through time. The hints about the game’s connection to Japanese history have me particularly excited, especially considering their stellar work on Like a Dragon: Ishin.

As for whether it ties back to the larger franchises or goes more historical, I reckon it’ll be a mix of both – just like a well-crafted tempura roll! With RGG Studios’ track record, they’ve got me hooked and eagerly waiting to unravel this mystery.

Now, if only they could find a way to incorporate some yakuza-themed karaoke into the game… I’d be all in for that!

At The Game Awards 2024, Project Century was unveiled as a secretive game developed by RGG Studios, the accomplished team responsible for the Like a Dragon / Yakuza series. Details about the game are scant, with only its apparent historical Japanese setting in 1915 being disclosed. This lack of information has sparked much fan conjecture, but studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama has brushed off all speculation, stating that the trailer does not reveal any secrets.

The information came to us from GameTalk (a Japanese publication) and was translated by Automaton before being reported on by Polygon. In a broadcast on Boxing Day, Yokoyama stated that the theories circulating are way off the mark. It appears that fans have been speculating that the game’s main character is a young Makoto Tojo, who would go on to establish the Tojo Clan of the future yakuza, but this seems unlikely.

The studio shows a deep interest in Japanese history, with their game Like a Dragon: Ishin portraying the tale of revolutionary samurai Sakamoto Ryoma. Since Project Century only reveals its 1915 timeframe, it’s safe to assume that it will at least incorporate the events of The Twenty-One Demands, which were presented by an expanding Japanese Empire to the Republic of China during World War I, as a key element in the plot.

As an avid fan, I’m curious to know what you believe Project Century will eventually revolve around. Will it connect with the broader universe that Rockstar Games has created, or is it going to delve deeper into history? I’d love to hear your thoughts, so feel free to share them in the comments below!
