The consistent speed at which RGG Studio releases “Like a Dragon” games continues to amaze, and the fact that most of these games are excellent value for money only adds to this impression. Before long, we’ll be immersed in another installment of this cherished series, titled “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.” This spinoff will feature Goro Majima, a beloved character, as the main playable hero. As you might expect, there’s a lot of anticipation for its release, and ahead of its debut, we’re going to share all the essential details about the game.
STORY
Six months after the events of “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth,” the story shifts its focus from Ichiban, Kiryu, and their associates to the legendary ex-Yakuza, Majima. Following mysterious circumstances, he finds himself on Rich Island, where he discovers that he has lost all his memories upon waking up. Accompanied by a boy named Noah who rescued him, Majima assumes the role of a modern-day pirate and sets sail on an adventure to uncover hidden treasures and regain his own lost memories.
NEW CHARACTERS
In “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii,” you’ll encounter a host of fresh faces joining the cast. Among them is Noah, who plays a significant role in the narrative. Additionally, there’s Jason Rich, the proprietor of an island bar and Noah’s father. Jason’s daughter, Moana, also makes an appearance. Furthermore, Teruhiko Shigaki, a former head of the Tojo clan, is another new character. There are more characters to be introduced too.
RETURNING CHARACTERS
In this Yakuza / Like a Dragon game, it’s only natural that many familiar characters will make an appearance. Without a doubt, Majima is the main attraction, but Taiga Saejima, his sworn brother, will also have a part to play. Additionally, Nishida and Daisaku Minami, who were once followers of Majima, are set to reappear as well.
LOCATIONS
In the style of the “Like a Dragon” series, maps and locations are cleverly reused, and true to form, “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” will resurface the map of Honolulu, initially showcased in last year’s “Infinite Wealth.” Besides Honolulu, another familiar location, Nele Island, will also make an appearance. Additionally, Rich Island, previously mentioned, will be accessible, and it will be accompanied by a new location called Madlantis, a favorite secret hideout among pirates.
NAVAL EXPLORATION AND COMBAT
In the shift from his usual activities to piracy, Majima’s actions will significantly alter the gameplay structure, just as you might expect. One of the major modifications to the series’ standard pattern is the introduction of exploration and combat on open waters. Players will assume command of Majima’s ship to sail across vast oceans, during which they may encounter adversaries for real-time naval skirmishes. After exchanging cannon fire and a wide range of other weapons such as guns, flamethrowers, and more, players will also have the opportunity to invade enemy ships for close-quarters combat.
GOROMARU
In the game, Maima’s ship, known as the Goromaru, will play a significant role. As expected, it serves as the primary means for traversing the seas and engaging with other pirates. Throughout the game, players can grow and enhance their crew, while also personalizing their ship with various customization options.
CREW BONDING
In some manner or another, relationship dynamics become crucial to the Yakuza series, and this trend will continue in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. This time, these dynamics will center around your crew, with Majima being able to foster relationships with his team members by participating in a range of side quests. As your bond with a crew member strengthens, you’ll notice enhancements in their performance, manifested as changes in their stats.
PIRATE COLISEUM
Among various optional activities, the Pirate Coliseum is something noteworthy for those seeking combative encounters. Located within Madlantis, this arena offers diverse combat experiences with exclusive prizes up for grabs. You’ll find four distinct battle modes, one of which involves naval conflicts, as you might anticipate.
RETURN TO BRAWLER COMBAT
In terms of ship battles, the game titled “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” will predominantly focus on hand-to-hand fights and brutal brawls instead. Unlike the financial management mechanics of “Infinite Wealth” and the turn-based combat style in “Yakuza 7“, this spinoff will return to the original series’ real-time combat system, so be prepared for thrilling, action-packed brawler fights.
FIGHTING STYLES
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” because it seems to share similarities with my beloved “Yakuza” and “Judgment” series. What excites me the most is the multiple ways to engage in combat, just like Kiryu and Majima did. The default style, “Mad Dog,” looks tailored for speed, agility, and aggression – a nod that will surely delight Majima fans. But what truly intrigues me is the “Sea Dog” style, where our protagonist gets armed with cutlasses, pistols, and other pirate gear, promising an entirely new combat experience!
MINIGAMES
In any “Like a Dragon” game, it’s hard to imagine the experience being fully rounded without a rich and diverse selection of minigames. And just as expected, “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” appears to be boasting an impressive lineup in this regard. Some fan-loved games are making a comeback, like Crazy Delivery, Dragon Kart, and of course, karaoke. Additionally, several classic Sega arcade games from the past will be integrated into the game once more, including “Space Harrier 3D” and “The Ocean Hunter.
NEW GAME PLUS
Sega and RGG Studio faced criticism for charging extra for the New Game Plus feature in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth after its release. However, they appear to have taken their lessons on board as Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is set to include this feature free of charge in an upcoming update.
LENGTH
Generally speaking, the mainline Yakuza games are extensive projects, but the spinoff titled “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” is expected to be a more concise (yet satisfying) adventure. As per RGG Studio, the gameplay duration should be approximately 1.5 times longer than “Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.” In other words, expect a playtime of around 15 to 20 hours.
PRICE
Due to being a shorter spinoff, produced within just one year, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii won’t be a full-priced game when it releases for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on February 21. Instead, its standard edition will retail at $60.
PC REQUIREMENTS
Typically, the system requirements for the game “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” aren’t very stringent. To play the game at its lowest settings (targeting 720p at 30 FPS) on your PC, you’ll need either an i5-3470 or an FX-6300 CPU, coupled with a graphics card such as a GeForce GTX 1050 (3 GB) or Radeon R9 370 (4 GB), and 8 GB of RAM. For a smoother gaming experience at 1080p and 60 FPS on recommended settings, you’ll need either an i5-6600 or Ryzen 3 2300X CPU, along with a GeForce GTX 1070 (8 GB), a Radeon RX 5600 XT (6 GB), or an Arc A750 (8 GB) graphics card, and 12 GB of RAM.
