As a movie buff, I can’t help but share an exciting piece of news – on this particular occasion, the heartwarming tale of Lilo & Stitch surpassed the Memorial Day Monday box office record previously set by Top Gun: Maverick (2022), starring Tom Cruise, raking in a staggering $33.8 million. Not only did it outshine Maverick, but it also managed to break into the top four biggest Monday box office hauls of all time, surpassing Avengers: Endgame’s $33.8 million earnings. It’s moments like these that make being a film enthusiast truly rewarding!

In my latest movie review, I’m diving into Disney’s latest offering, “Lilo & Stitch,” which joins an ever-growing list of animated-to-live-action remakes that includes “The Little Mermaid,” “Mulan,” and “Cinderella.” This time around, we have Maia Kealoha portraying Lilo Pelekai, a spirited young Hawaiian girl, who forms an unlikely friendship with the mischievous blue extraterrestrial named Stitch, voiced by Chris Sanders. The movie captures the essence of the original animated classic while offering a fresh take on this heartwarming tale.

Feedback for the project has been far from great, with longtime fans expressing dissatisfaction due to substantial alterations in the original story (explore each change made by the live-action Lilo & Stitch here), yet these criticisms do not seem to hinder its success, as it is currently leading the global box office.

What Does Lilo & Stitch’s Box Office Success Mean?

It’s highly unlikely that the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” will disappear from theaters any time soon. With its impressive box office performance during its opening Memorial Day weekend, it appears set for continued success in the days ahead.

To date, worldwide, the film has earned more than $340 million, placing it in a league of its own at this early stage. It’s noteworthy that such earnings could potentially lead discussions about the film reaching or even surpassing the billion-dollar mark.

It’s expected that Lilo & Stitch will be one of the highest-grossing films in 2025 up to now, but there are other movies such as Fantastic 4 and Avatar 3 that may end up earning more at the box office by the end of this year.
