Lilo & Stitch Box Office Breaks Avengers: Endgame Record

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but be blown away by the unstoppable success of Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch.” Over Memorial Day weekend, this reimagining of the 2002 animated classic set the bar high as it became the biggest 4-day Memorial Day weekend opening domestically in history with a whopping $182.7 million! But that’s not all; the film continued to rake in the dough on Monday, grossing an impressive $37 million. To put things into perspective, this figure surpasses the $36.8 million Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” made on its first Monday back in April 2019, making it the fourth highest-grossing domestic Monday ever! Simply incredible!

As a devoted movie enthusiast, it’s fascinating to note that when it comes to domestic Monday box office records, Disney takes the lead. Marvel’s Black Panther made history in 2018, earning an astonishing $40.15 million on a Monday following Presidents Day, surpassing the previous record holder, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had brought in $40.1 million. Interestingly, the third-best Monday performance was claimed by Spider-Man: No Way Home from 2021, raking in a whopping $37.1 million. Although Sony Pictures was responsible for producing and distributing this film, Disney played a part as a co-financier.

On Monday, Lilo & Stitch surpassed Endgame to secure the fourth position, while Avatar: The Way of Water (Disney’s other blue-themed movie) earned $32.2 million on the day after Christmas in 2022. Interestingly, Stitch outperformed Top Gun: Maverick, which previously held the record for the biggest Memorial Day Monday gross, before Stitch made its appearance this past weekend.

As a devoted Disney fan, I’m thrilled to share that, as of now, “Lilo & Stitch” stands unchallenged as the top-grossing film globally with an impressive box office collection of $361.3 million. Interestingly, this adorable duo has outranked Tom Cruise’s eighth and final “Mission: Impossible” film, “The Final Reckoning,” not once but twice! This means that our beloved Stitch has managed to dethrone the movie star himself.

In another impressive feat, “Mission: Impossible 8” set a new record for its series with an opening of $79 million domestically and an additional $112 million from international box offices, bringing its worldwide debut total to a staggering $191 million.

By adding up the total earnings of films such as “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Final Reckoning”, along with ongoing releases like “Final Destination Bloodlines”, “Sinners”, and Disney/Marvel’s “Thunderbolts”, the Memorial Day weekend box office in 2025 has officially become the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend in cinema history.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, expressed that the affection for the movie ‘Lilo & Stitch‘ keeps expanding. The intention behind this fresh adaptation is to let viewers revisit these beloved characters on the big screen and hopefully experience the same level of joy watching it as we did creating it. We’re incredibly proud of this groundbreaking debut, and I want to express my gratitude to our teams for their outstanding work, as well as to the fans whose support made this extraordinary opening possible.

David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, commented, “Stitch demonstrates Disney’s exceptional ability. It started as an outstanding animated movie in 2002, evolved into a series, and built a devoted fanbase over time. This passion inspired us to create this fantastic film that we are now releasing globally.

This year, the animated film Lilo & Stitch helped Walt Disney Studios surpass the $2 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales, making Disney the first studio to accomplish this feat in 2023.

In 2024, Disney Animation’s film titled Moana 2 (released during Thanksgiving) along with Mufasa: The Lion King (released during Christmas), A Complete Unknown from Searchlight Pictures, Captain America: Brave New World in 2025, the live-action Snow White, and Thunderbolts were among the movies that collectively amassed a staggering $2 billion total.

*Note: I couldn’t find “Thunderbolts” as an officially announced movie title under Marvel Studios, but I assumed it might be one due to its placement in this context.

2025 will see Disney’s release schedule featuring the following titles from various studios: “Elio” by Pixar on June 20, “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps” on July 25, “Freaky Friday” reboot on August 8, “Tron: Ares” in October, “Predator: Badlands” on Nov. 7, the sequel “Zootopia 2” on Nov. 26, and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” on Dec. 19.

The animated film “Lilo & Stitch,” featuring debutant Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, Tia Carrere as Mrs. Kekoa, Hannah Waddingham as the Grand Councilwoman, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Zach Galifianakis as Jumba, and Chris Sanders providing the voice of Stitch, is currently playing in theaters near you.
