Right now, discussions about Lilo & Stitch are trending everywhere in pop culture. The recent Disney live-action adaptation has been a huge hit at the box office, even with mixed opinions from fans. Meanwhile, the original animated movie and its sequels are climbing up the charts on Disney+. To celebrate the new film, the lovable yet mischievous blue alien is now appearing in anime form!
2002 saw the debut of the much-loved animated film Lilo & Stitch, created by Chris Sanders. The story unfolds as a blue extraterrestrial finds himself on Earth, where he’s taken in by Lilo and her older sister Nani, who are grappling with the loss of their parents. However, the 2025 live-action adaptation has stirred up debate online, partly due to the criticism Disney’s live-action remakes have been facing, but also because it alters key aspects of the original story. Fortunately, an upcoming anime version should resonate with fans of the initial movie, evoking a sense of nostalgia.
Lilo & Stitch Gets an Anime Makeover
The brief anime spin-off of “Lilo & Stitch,” titled “Ohana” (a nod to the Hawaiian word for family), was uploaded onto the official Walt Disney Studios Japan YouTube channel as a tribute to the live-action film’s Japanese premiere on June 6th. This short animation revisits some cherished scenes from the original movie. In one scene, Lilo encounters Stitch who hurls dishes at her as she pursues him with a pillow. Subsequently, we see Lilo and Stitch being supported by Lilo’s elder sister Nani on a surfboard, while Nani’s boyfriend David glides alongside them on his surfboard.

The live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” will always be a point of contention among fans of the original film, as they debate the modifications Disney made during adaptation. Regardless of opinions about the 2025 adaption, Tekken’s short animation successfully embodies the essence and delight of the original story while emphasizing its family-oriented themes.
The real-life version of “Lilo & Stitch” is now playing in cinemas. The initial animated film, along with its numerous follow-ups, can be streamed on Disney+. A new anime short, which you can watch for free, is available on YouTube (and it’s linked above).
