Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Remake Reveals Shocking Truth About Nani’s Past That Fans Missed!

SPOILERS lie ahead for Lilo & Stitch.

Recently, there’s been a lot of discussion online about the live-action remakes of Disney movies, and Lilo & Stitch has been a particularly hot topic due to its differences from the original version. In my review of Lilo & Stich, I mentioned that I had high expectations since I was around when the 2002 animated film was first released. While some fans have raised valid points about Nani’s character arc not aligning with the original, I also want to discuss how the new movie delves into a popular fan theory concerning her.

There’s Been A Longtime Fan Theory About Nani In Lilo & Stitch

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reflect on the heartwarming tale of Lilo & Stitch. In this story, I find myself in the shoes of Nani, an 18-year-old trying to make ends meet with service jobs, doing everything in my power to care for Lilo after our parents’ untimely passing. The specter of past encounters with social workers casts a long shadow over us, and there’s a palpable fear that we might lose Lilo to the state.

Over time, I’ve observed attentively, and it seems fans as sharp-eyed as myself have spotted surfing trophies adorning Nani’s dresser. A quick glance at the image above confirms this detail. These trophies hint at Nani’s passion for surfing, a passion that adds depth to her character in this touching story.

Over the twenty years prior to the release of the live-action film, fans have speculated that Nani might have been an exceptional surfer who competed and potentially had a flourishing career in surfing before the demise of her parents. In an interview with TopMob in 2022, Tia Carerre, the original voice actress for Nani, stated that this theory was never brought up. However, she touched upon how Nani’s challenging circumstances are portrayed in her bond with Lilo throughout the movie, as Nani functions as a maternal figure but is also just a young girl herself.

I Talked To Sydney Agudong About How The Live-Action Movie Expands On Nani

Previously, it was uncertain whether Nani had abandoned her aspirations for Lilo, but the 2025 release of the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” provides insights into this aspect for the first time. In this version, we gain a deeper understanding of Nani’s perspective, as she shares the dreams many young women have – attending college. Unforeseen circumstances, however, led her to take on the role of Lilo’s guardian unexpectedly.

Furthermore, we discover that her surfing skills are impressive enough for teaching, showcasing Nani’s proficiency in this sport more prominently than before. While it doesn’t fully establish a career aspect for her (particularly in the original), it certainly emphasizes her surfing prowess. Notably, she is the one who rescues Stitch from drowning instead of David. Regarding character development, Agudong mentioned this when discussing enhancements to the character:

In my opinion, we should aim to add complexity to Nani’s character by exploring her arc, backstory, and struggles more thoroughly. Prior to filming, we had to undergo extensive water training and perform many stunts, which was an exciting process that also allowed us to develop Nani’s real-life experiences. It’s fascinating to witness the evolution of her character on set, which is truly remarkable. Nani is a powerful, self-reliant girl who works tirelessly to maintain family unity.

It’s slightly surprising that she chooses UC San Diego over Hawaii for a marine biology degree, considering she resides in a stunning location already. Yet, the latest Lilo & Stitch movie leaves space for Nani to pursue her personal ambitions beyond caring for Lilo. Moreover, thanks to advanced alien technology, it appears as though she spends an extraordinary amount of time with Lilo through the portal ray gun.

Enjoy streaming the classic movie “Lilo & Stitch” on Disney+! The ad-supported subscription plan is available for $9.99 per month, with an option to go ad-free at $15.99 monthly. Or, you can save 16% by opting for a pre-paid yearly plan of $159.99. Check out this offer now!

Meanwhile, it’s important to note that while Lilo was being looked after by Tutu, she was included in the movie due to Chris Bright, a screenwriter from Hawaii, believing that Nani and Lilo would not feel as lonely in a genuine Hawaiian setting according to one producer’s account.

Some fans might be disheartened by Nani’s character change in the live-action movie, as it results in a fractured relationship between the sisters by the end. However, Sydney Agudong and I are both content with the fact that Nani’s backstory was enhanced more significantly for the 2025 version compared to previous iterations. In other words, don’t miss out on watching Lilo & Stitch in theaters!
