Disney’s fresh take on “Lilo & Stitch” might not have received the highest praises among its live-action adaptations, but it’s swiftly climbing the box office charts. After just two weekends in theaters, “Lilo & Stitch” has amassed a staggering $611 million globally, outperforming Disney’s third-best live-action remake, “Cinderella” (2015), which grossed $543.5 million. It surpassed several other studio remakes in terms of ticket sales too, yet its critical reception remains relatively lower. However, the fervor from fans could potentially give this film a more enduring reputation compared to some others.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite animated film, “Lilo & Stitch,” has surpassed both “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and the 2023 version of “The Little Mermaid” in terms of box office success. With a whopping $610.8 million in total ticket sales, it’s now sitting pretty above these two films. However, it’s important to note that Disney’s live-action remakes like “The Lion King” (2019), which raked in over $1.6 billion, are still ahead of the game. Yet, it’s noteworthy that “Lilo & Stitch” is rapidly approaching the movies that have garnered the best critical and audience acclaim.
As per Rotten Tomatoes, the latest version of Lilo & Stitch boasts a Tomatometer score of 70%, making it the ninth-best rated Disney Live-action remake out of all. On the other hand, the Cinderella remake holds a Certified Fresh rating with a Tomatometer score of 84%. It’s important to note that this site calculates an average from the reviews it receives. In this case, Rotten Tomatoes considered 182 reviews for Lilo & Stitch and 256 reviews for Cinderella. The impressive aspect is that despite having more reviews, Cinderella still managed to score higher, showcasing its critical acclaim.
As a film enthusiast, I find it intriguing to note that the ratings on the Popcornmeter tell a different story compared to the usual trends. Currently, an overwhelming 85% of user reviews for ‘Lilo & Stitch’ are thumbs-up, while ‘Cinderella’ scores slightly lower at 78%. This gap might narrow over time, but it seems plausible that ‘Lilo & Stitch’ may lose some of its appeal in the future.
Generally speaking, Disney’s live-action adaptations often face scrutiny due to being compared to their beloved animated predecessors. This is true even for a film like Lilo & Stitch, which is currently the most recent movie from Disney that has been remade. Critics have already expressed some criticism towards it because of significant changes made to the story and characters. Previously, films like Cinderella were praised for their faithfulness to the original, but this isn’t the case with Lilo & Stitch.
For those who wish to make their own comparisons, the 2025 version of “Lilo & Stitch” is currently playing in cinemas. If you’d prefer to watch the original or another favorite like “Cinderella,” they are available for streaming right now on Disney+.
