Lilo & Stitch Star Ordered by Family to Take Remake Role After They Were Too Scared to Watch the Original

The live-action reboot of “Lilo & Stitch” brings back memories for numerous viewers, but for Courtney B. Vance and his family, it’s essentially an opportunity for redemption. In 2006, when “Lilo & Stitch” was first released, Vance had two children who were too scared to watch the animated aliens. Recently, he accepted the role of Agent Cobra Bubbles, which came about nearly two decades later. His family encouraged him to do so, partly as a way to confront their fears and conquer them. As a result, Vance entered the movie without any prior knowledge, unlike many other fans who have personal connections with this story. This unique lack of familiarity provides him an intriguing perspective on the entire narrative.

The actor shared that his family required him to take on the role because they were apprehensive about Stitch when the film initially released, as their twins were still young at the time. The Stitch characters made them uncomfortable, so they didn’t watch it. However, if it had been a movie like “Cars” or others from that era, he would have jumped at the opportunity! Instead, he joined the Lilo & Stitch world as a novice and was warmly welcomed by everyone during filming in Hawaii. It was a delightful experience for him.

In the new adaptation, Vance steps into the beloved character originally voiced by Ving Rhames. However, this version of the character has some differences compared to its previous incarnation. Originally, Bubbles was a social worker tasked with evaluating Nani’s ability to care for Lilo and ensuring their home was safe. In this updated storyline, Bubbles is transformed into a federal agent on a mission to find Stitch. The role of the social worker has been taken by Mrs. Kekoa, who was voiced by Tia Carrere in the original series, as she plays Nani in this remake.

In 2006, when Vance’s twins were born, Lilo & Stitch had already been a well-established success since its release in 2002. During that period, the TV series and a direct-to-video sequel of Lilo & Stitch were popular, with the latter having been released just the year before. It seems incredible, but it appears that Vance’s children avoided the influence of this movie for nearly two decades.

In 1997, Vance tied the knot with actress Angela Bassett, and their set of twins are their only offspring. The couple frequently attends red carpet events together, but last week, Vance took their daughter Bronwyn to a premiere. It remains to be seen how the twins reacted when they got to watch Stitch’s journey in a fresh format for the first time.

On this coming Friday, 23rd May, you can catch the much-loved “Lilo & Stitch” in theaters nationwide! If you prefer to stream it, the original film is already available on Disney+ right now.
