Lily Allen is taking care of herself.
After the public revelation of my separation from my husband David Harbour, following four years of matrimony, I’ve chosen to shed light on my recent journey at a mental health retreat.
In the week since it was announced that I had parted ways with my husband David Harbour after four years of marriage, I have decided to share some insights about my recent stay at a mental health facility.)
Lily shared during their Feb. 13 podcast episode of Miss Me? with Miquita Oliver that she spent a few weeks at a treatment center, an experience she found beneficial. There, she participated in both group and individual therapy sessions. She felt the need to take some time off from her usual surroundings to reflect and heal. Her stay involved delving into shadow work and addressing issues related to her inner child.
She went on to say, “It’s no walk in the park and it’s an ongoing process,” she explained. “It’s a long-term endeavor of healing that requires patience. It’s not something that can be fixed overnight, but I’ve been practicing meditation. I meditate daily, at least twice a day, and it’s making a real difference for me.
Although she doesn’t consider herself overly spiritual, she acknowledged that meditation serves as a powerful means for concentrating on her breathing exercises. Furthermore, she mentioned that it assists her in striving to be present more often, reducing excessive rumination about the past and concerns regarding the future.
As a lifestyle enthusiast and mother of two wonderful girls Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11, shared with my former partner Sam Cooper, I made the choice to undergo this treatment not only for myself but primarily for their wellbeing.
As an over-the-moon mom, let me clarify: people might misunderstand, thinking I harbor ill feelings towards my kids. Nothing could be further from the truth! My heart brims with love for them. Unfortunately, at this juncture, I find myself needing to summon every ounce of my strength for their sake. It’s becoming increasingly challenging for me to consistently meet their needs in a manner that truly reflects who they deserve.
She explained, “It was a significant step to depart them temporarily, to concentrate on my personal well-being for a while. However, in essence, it was for their sake. Of course, it benefits me, but primarily, it’s for their benefit so I can navigate this difficult period better. I required assistance to manage that.
For the 39-year-old, it was crucial to seize that moment since she always strives to ensure her kids don’t feel burdened with supporting her.
She stated, “This isn’t their mistake; it’s part of my role to comfort and ensure they feel safe and secure. Unfortunately, I couldn’t fulfill that duty during my personal distress. However, I believe I can now.
She admitted, “I don’t claim to have it all figured out, and I may never get it perfectly right. However, I can assure you that I am significantly improving my position.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the singer known as “Not Fair” had parted ways with the star from “Stranger Things”. However, it wasn’t until January that she publicly declared her decision to step away from the limelight to prioritize her mental well-being.
On her January 9th podcast, she confessed that she wasn’t feeling well. She’s been discussing this for quite some time, but her feelings have been getting progressively worse, to the point where they’ve become unmanageable – she’s been going round and round in circles.
Lily clarified that during her discussion, she emphasized that she hadn’t slipped up in her recovery process; instead, she took a brief respite.
Now, read on to see more celebs who’ve opened up about their sobriety.
Actor Tom Holland, who played Spider-Man: No Way Home, quit drinking alcohol in 2022 as he felt like it had him under its control. He admitted on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast that he was indeed addicted to alcohol and didn’t hesitate to acknowledge it. In his view, anyone who drinks a beer daily might be grappling with a small issue related to alcohol consumption.
Then, you’d arrive at the point where you might think, “Oh, I wish I hadn’t finished that final drink,” as the actor explained further. The following morning, you would find yourself with a throbbing headache.
After adopting the new lifestyle, Holland found that he has been sleeping more soundly and managing issues more effectively.
He said, “Instead of getting upset when problems arise on the set, I can now handle them more calmly. My mental focus was significantly improved. I felt healthier and more physically fit.
The lead actor from the “Hunt for Red October” movie isn’t usually open about his 40-year-long struggle with sobriety.
He mentioned that the topic doesn’t come up frequently, but he does address it occasionally when it seems appropriate. He has been sober for 39 years now, achieving sobriety on February 23, 1985.
Talking about his life following his relocation from New York City to Los Angeles in 1983, Alec described his struggles as “an intense issue that I faced daily for two years. It’s safe to say I inhaled a significant amount of cocaine, enough to match the distance to Saturn. We brought it home with us. In those days, cocaine was almost like coffee – everyone seemed to be using it all day long.
And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.
Today, he relies on the city around him.
He mentioned that New York has a calming effect on him, describing it as his home. As he roams around, he discovers new aspects of the city that he had never noticed before. For instance, he might gaze at a building and suddenly realize details about its doors that he had previously overlooked. He often meets friends for meals and coffee breaks in this vibrant city.
Back in April 2024, the actress from The Princess Diaries announced that she has been sober for over five years. In her conversation with the New York Times, she expressed, “This marks a significant achievement for me.
As a lifestyle expert, let me share my personal insight: “I realized instinctively that it wasn’t the right fit for me. It seemed so intense when I had to say ‘no’ completely. However, when it comes to allergies or reactions that could potentially harm us, we don’t argue with them. So, I decided to stop arguing with my intuition as well.
She’s content with the choice she made, and she went on to say, “I find myself in a much better situation with this decision.” For her, it served as a stepping stone rather than a place for self-pity. And, as you may guess, she isn’t fond of dwelling on negative feelings.
At the 2018 Woman of the Year ceremony hosted by the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a home offering recovery for women battling substance and alcohol addiction, Moore shared insights into the self-damaging journey that almost hindered her professional progression.
Reflecting on my life, I believe there are pivotal moments that mold us into who we become and the paths we choose. In the early stages of my career, I found myself sliding towards self-destruction – a dangerous path where even my achievements couldn’t shake off the feeling of inadequacy. No matter how successful I became, I always felt like I wasn’t good enough. I had little regard for my own worth and this destructive behavior soon led me to a critical crossroads in my life. At the time, it was unclear why things were happening, but looking back now, I wonder if it was some sort of divine guidance.
In 2012, Moore expressed gratitude towards two individuals who barely knew, for presenting her with a sort of ultimatum to change her ways. She jokingly said, “Unless I was deceased, I needed to appear,” further stating that she was offered a chance to alter the trajectory of her life before it fell apart completely.
Moore commented, “They observed aspects of me that I wasn’t aware of, and I’m deeply thankful for this insight. If not for their faith in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Cyrus opened up in 2022 about her ongoing recovery from a Xanax addiction, which she started addressing in 2020. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she explained, “Xanax provided a sense of structure during the time when I desperately needed it, as I didn’t want to be idly sitting and churning in my thoughts.” She added, “It brought me hope.
The singer remarked, “When I realized that you could momentarily block out the world and dull your suffering, that was the end of it.
She mentioned that her friends at one point tacitly endorsed her drug abuse, making it seem like a gradually deepening, all-consuming abyss. However, during the pandemic, Cyrus admitted she faced difficulties and felt disconnected emotionally. “I was constantly dozing off and falling asleep,” she reminisced. “And I couldn’t manage to stay awake or keep my eyes open because I had sunk so low.
She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”
16 years had passed since the former star of “Parenthood” abstained from alcohol, but unfortunately, he resumed consumption in 2020 when he took Vicodin following a motorcycle mishap.
For the past eight weeks or so, he mentioned during his “Armchair Expert” podcast, he’s been using them quite a bit throughout the day. He is permitted to do so at certain doses due to a prescription, but he also adds more to it.
He went on to express his dislike for the situation, admitting that he’s been dishonest with others. He acknowledged the need to stop, but his tolerance has escalated so rapidly that he’s now consuming around eight 30mg doses daily, a level he knows will lead to a harsh withdrawal. This realization has left him feeling afraid and isolated, carrying a heavy burden of secrecy.
Back in 2018, I openly shared my struggle with a decade-long addiction to opiates that started in the late ’80s following a minor cosmetic procedure for my inherited puffy eyes. The prescription I received altered the course of my life significantly. “For ten years, I found myself stealing and deceiving, living a secret life,” I confided in People magazine. “Nobody knew. Nobody.
In the summer of 1998, when Curtis’s sister visited and brought painkillers prescribed for a rib injury, Curtis realized she had hit rock bottom. She admitted that she knew her sister had kept the pills in the guest room closet during her stay. Overwhelmed by the memory, she confessed to the publication that she had taken all of her sister’s opiates before her departure. Knowing that her sister would pack and discover her missing pills, Curtis felt compelled to confess. She wrote a note and left it on her sister’s suitcase. When her sister returned home, she embraced Curtis, expressing love and concern for her well-being, and voicing her reluctance to watch Curtis self-destruct.
On February 3, 1999, she went to her initial gathering, the same day she disclosed her fight to her spouse, filmmaker Christopher Guest. “He couldn’t believe he hadn’t picked up on it before,” Curtis stated, further mentioning that she has been sober ever since.
In 2021, Barrymore, who has previously dealt with alcohol and drug addiction issues, announced a significant achievement in her recovery journey. On the show CBS Mornings, she admitted for the first time in a long while, “I haven’t had a drink of alcohol in two and a half years.” She further stated that abstaining from alcohol was something she realized no longer benefited her life.
She remarked, “It feels surprisingly freeing yet exposing when we uncover who we truly are, what we’ve hidden, and the achievements we’ve labored over.
Later on, Barrymore clarified to the Los Angeles Times that she refrains from using the term “sober” as she doesn’t wish to be perceived as a “paragon of perfection,” or a “Puritan.
2023 found me repeatedly pondering, “One day, I’ll conquer this mystery, I’ll crack the code.” But then, it suddenly struck me: “I’ve never truly mastered this, and I don’t think I ever will.
During the early 2000s, the actor from “A Star Is Born” faced challenges with cocaine addiction. However, his friend Will Arnett intervened and spoke to him about his problematic behavior.
During his 2022 interview on the Smartless podcast, Cooper stated that it was then for the first time he became aware of his struggles with substance abuse, an incident he would never forget.
Giving credit to Arnett for doing so, Cooper noted, “He bravely initiated a tough conversation with me which led me to reflect and ultimately make the choice to alter the course of my life.
In simpler terms, the main character from “Fight Club” battled alcohol addiction for years before being helped by Cooper to achieve sobriety. During the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards, he acknowledged this help, stating that he has enjoyed every day since becoming sober and credited Cooper for it.
In September 2023, the former star of Cruel Intentions posted on Instagram that it had been the longest period since his teen years when he hadn’t used some form of nicotine or marijuana, along with other substances.
He expressed gratitude for the liberation from addiction and substances, stating that being sober brings a sense of authentic clarity and strengthens his spiritual bond, which is truly fulfilling.
In 2018, the singer rejoiced over six years of being sober during a tour. However, she left her fans in shock later in the same year by releasing the candid song “Sober”, which disclosed that she had experienced a relapse.
She apologized, singing, “Mama, I’m truly sorry, but I’m no longer in control / Daddy, please understand, I’ve spilled drinks on the floor again / To those who have always stood by me / We’ve traveled this bumpy road before, I’m sorry, I’m not in control anymore.
A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.
Two weeks ago, she posted on Instagram: “I’ve always been open about my struggle with addiction.” What I’ve discovered is that this condition doesn’t just go away or diminish over time. Instead, it’s an ongoing battle I’m still working to conquer… Right now, I need some time for healing and to prioritize my sobriety and recovery path. The affection you’ve all shown me will always be remembered, and I eagerly await the moment when I can announce that I have emerged victorious. I will continue to persevere in this fight.
2018 saw her reflecting on her struggles with substance abuse involving both sex and alcohol. “My addictions often shift and change. When I was younger, I believe there may have been an element of a sexual addiction for me, as I thought that everything could be solved through sex,” she stated, before detailing the moment she acknowledged her escalating drinking issue.
She recalled hitting a low point when she was alone at home, with two bottles of wine already finished and reaching for a third. It made her pause and think, “Wait a minute. Here you are, alone in the house, about to finish your third bottle of wine? There could be an issue here.
She shared, “I quit abruptly, without gradual reduction – I call it going ‘cold turkey’. You see, I tend to indulge in things intensely, so self-control is key for me. Sometimes I get too engrossed in activities, and that’s why I have to stay vigilant.
It’s not the action itself that matters, but the motivation behind it. The reason you’re doing it. It’s the behavior connected to it because if you enjoy a lot of sexual activity, that’s fine, but why are you engaging in so much of it? That’s what you need to examine.
One of the Backstreet Boys bandmates experimented with drugs for the first time prior to filming their music video for “The Call” in 2000. Later on, he confessed to Good Morning America that he felt incredibly energetic during the shoot. He managed to overcome his addiction in 2021 and experienced numerous positive outcomes within a year, such as shedding 32 pounds over a seven-month period by giving up alcohol and fast food.
In an interview with Today in September 2022, he stated, “Alcohol consumption led to weight increase for me, but it also negatively impacted my emotional wellbeing.
Following Mac Miller’s untimely demise, Shad Moss (also known as Bow Wow) publicly shared on Twitter that he had battled an addiction to cough syrup in the past. In a series of tweets, he expressed his concerns about drug abuse and revealed his struggle:
“To the youth – Stop with these foolish drugs,” he started. “I’m going to tell you something. When me and Omarion worked on the ‘Face Off’ album, I was high on lean every day! When you saw me going off on Torae on BET, I was high on lean. My attitude, everything changed. My fans began…turning against me, even my family. I never promoted lean in my songs. The whole time I was on the UCP tour with Chris [Brown], I was sipping 4’s at least 7 times a day. I was addicted until our show in Cincinnati… I came off stage and passed out, woke up in the hospital – I was having withdrawals.”
“I have never felt pain like that before,” Bow Wow continued. “It was summer, but I was walking around with three hoodies on because I was so cold. I missed the Chicago show of that tour and Baltimore show BECAUSE I WAS HIGH AND SICK!!!! That’s not cool, and I was doing it to be cool! Get rid of that stuff! Be a good son or daughter. Be the best you. I’m going to start being more vocal. We need to save the youth from going out early. Parents, watch your kids. Talk to them. We want you all to live, man. I almost died messing with syrup.”
“To this day, my stomach will…Never be the same, and it hasn’t been,” he concluded. “DRUG-FREE is the way to be SMART. Grow up, tighten up out here. We can’t lose any more of you. Not one! I love all of you. The young artists, all the kids around the world – don’t follow a trend. Break the cycle. PEACE.
2018 saw the singer, Gwyneth Paltrow, reveal a raw and candid account of her past struggles with addiction in both her fourth studio album titled “No Shame” and her memoir “My Thoughts Exactly.” In these works, she admitted to excessive cocaine use and heavy drinking that led to a state of being “almost parasitically drunk.” This struggle reached a critical point when she unintentionally headbutted Orlando Bloom at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party, causing herself to faint. Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow then staged an intervention as a result.
In conversation with The Guardian, she expressed, “I felt nothing could touch or fulfill me. One morning during those difficult times, I found myself contemplating, ‘Perhaps heroin might be the solution, as nothing else seems to be effective.’
In the 1980s, an actor known for The Parent Trap struggled with cocaine addiction, leading him to rehab in 1990. He later discussed this on Today, sharing that he came of age in the ’60s and ’70s when there was a significantly more relaxed view towards drug use.
In 2018, he openly acknowledged that his daily routine during the 1980s involved heavy cocaine use. He confessed to pleading with God to take away his addiction, promising to never touch it again as he had to be at work soon after. However, by 4 in the afternoon, his resolve would weaken and he’d think, “It’s not so bad.” This could be rephrased as: In 2018, he admitted that from the ’80s, he used cocaine almost every day. He often found himself begging God to take it away, promising to quit if only he had a few more hours before work. Yet, by 4 pm, he’d start thinking that perhaps it wasn’t so bad.
He described an intense, personal event he referred to as a “moment of pure, radiant light” where he envisioned himself in either a deceased state or losing everything valuable to him. Overwhelmed, he needed to share this with his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, and find some understanding. This marked the end of his relationship with drugs and cocaine.
Following an incident at a Newport Beach hotel where Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte attempted to force open the door of his own room, Lochte decided to seek treatment in 2018. According to his representative, Lochte has been struggling with alcohol addiction for a long time and unfortunately, this struggle has taken a destructive turn. His rep told TopMob News in a statement that Ryan recognizes the need for professional help to overcome his addiction and will be seeking immediate treatment.
Ryan understands that overcoming this disease immediately is crucial for him to avoid making unfavorable choices later on, to become the best husband and father possible, and if he aims to reach his goal of competing again at the top level in swimming during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Despite understanding that it’s typically advised against, getting sober for someone else isn’t the norm, but for this former star of “Parenthood,” his relationship with Melanie Lynskey played a significant role in his decision to abstain from alcohol.
In a conversation on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2023, I shared my realization: “At one moment, I understood her greatness and believed she’d be perfect for someone truly deserving. However, I didn’t see myself as that person worthy enough. Instead, I felt a tad unstable or over-the-top.
However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.
In the initial stages of their relationship, he found it simpler to claim that he was acting for her because, during that period, he didn’t feel particularly valuable. He didn’t worry as much about causing himself pain as he did about causing her harm. Consequently, it was more straightforward for him to assert, ‘I’m doing this for her.’ Now, however, he’s doing it for his own sake.
As a devoted fan, I can share that this renowned country artist has been sober for almost a decade now, but his journey wasn’t easy. His struggle with alcohol and pain medication started shortly after he graduated from high school, and it persisted even as his career flourished. He confessed that he always kept a black leather laptop bag loaded with bottles of Jagermeister or vodka within easy reach. Every hour and a half to two hours, he’d take a few good swigs from the bottle, and every three or four hours, he’d need a couple of pills. This is what he revealed to People magazine in the past.
Despite having no impact on his success, he asserted that he was not faltering or struggling in any way. Instead, he was thriving – composing more music during that period than he does currently. This, he added, was what made it terrifying for him.
Towards the end of 2011, he was admitted to the hospital due to pancreatitis, and doctors warned him that if he continued drinking, he wouldn’t live to see his next birthday. However, instead of taking immediate action, he tried to moderate on his own: “I thought I could control it, like, ‘Okay, I’ll only take two pills today. I’ll only drink this much from my bottle and make a mark on the bottle,'” he reminisced. This self-imposed restriction worked for a few days – but then someone would throw a party.
After realizing he needed assistance, he admitted himself into rehab on December 18, 2011. “I reached a point where I understood it was something beyond my capabilities alone,” Gilbert explained. “It infuriated me immensely and left me feeling ashamed. I’m quite determined, but this was the one aspect of my life that I couldn’t manage to control.
