Line of Duty and Endeavour stars lead tense trailer for Until I Kill You

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for true crime dramas and a soft spot for stories of resilience, I must say the trailer for ITV’s Until I Kill You has piqued my interest significantly. The gripping narrative, starring the talented Anna Maxwell Martin and Shaun Evans, seems to promise an emotionally charged journey that delves into the harrowing realities faced by Delia Balmer.

A sneak peek at ITV’s thrilling new series, “Until I Kill You,” has been unveiled. This upcoming true crime drama features Anna Maxwell Martin, known for her role in Line of Duty, and Shaun Evans, who starred in Endeavour.

This television show narrates the real-life account of Delia Balmer, a woman who miraculously survived a lethal romance with John Sweeney, a murderer. It also delves into her harrowing ordeal navigating the criminal justice system as they strive to bring him to justice for his misdeeds.

In the preview, character Delia (played by Martin) has a scene where she encounters character John (portrayed by Evans). Later on, Martin’s character can be seen menacing Delia, and when she talks to the police, she states that the truth is evidently before them.

The official summary of the series, derived from Balmer’s book “Living with a Serial Killer,” goes like this: “In 1991, Delia lives an unattached and nomadic life in London as a traveling nurse through an agency. When she encounters another free-spirited individual named John Sweeney at a local pub, it appears to be the bond she has been longing for.

Over time, the evolving dynamic reveals Sweeney’s bohemian, rebellious character transforming into a more ominous aspect. This metamorphosis reaches its peak with a string of aggressive actions towards Delia, where he confides that he murdered his previous girlfriend and hid her remains in an Amsterdam canal after the act.

Sweeney is apprehended; however, due to an oversight by the court in underestimating his danger, he’s released on bail. Immediately after, he goes after Delia and inflicts a terrible, almost fatal assault on her. Miraculously, she lives through it, but Sweeney manages to escape capture and vanishes.

After being devastated by Sweeney’s brutal attacks and wounds, Delia courageously endeavors to reconstruct her life. However, seven years later, Sweeney is apprehended for murdering another girlfriend in North London. Once more, Delia’s fragile progress is disrupted when she must confront Sweeney in a court of law, with her testimony playing a crucial role in the prosecution’s case against him.

“This account chronicles a woman’s remarkable resilience in enduring both bodily and emotional hardships, even when the systems designed to safeguard her fell short.

As a devoted viewer, I find “Until I Kill You” joining an impressive lineup of gripping true-crime series on ITV, such as “The Long Shadow” and “The Hunt for Raoul Moat.

Until I Kill You will air on ITV1 and ITVX over four consecutive nights in November.
