Lisa Kudrow Reveals What Historical Figure She Loved the Most in Time Bandits

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of science fiction and fantasy stories, I can hardly contain my excitement for Apple TV+’s upcoming adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits.” Having grown up watching Gilliam’s innovative films, like “Brazil” and “12 Monkeys,” I am thrilled to see Lisa Kudrow leading the cast of this unique and imaginative series.

Lisa Kudrow is set to make her comeback on TV this month with the new Apple TV+ series “Time Bandits,” based on Terry Gilliam’s classic movie of the same name. This television adaptation, developed by Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”), Iain Morris (“The Inbetweeners”), and Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”), is produced by Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content’s AC Studios, and MRC. The story follows an 11-year-old history enthusiast who is kidnapped by a band of thieves and taken on an unforgettable adventure through space and time. Not only will they attempt to save his parents, but he’ll also encounter numerous historical figures and eccentric characters – think “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” but with pirates, in which Lisa Kudrow and her team are involved.

In the story, Madam Zheng, who historically led Chinese pirate ships against the British Navy in 1810, left a deep impression on Kudrow. Her role is significant within the Time Bandits narrative as she was the first to recognize young Kevin’s (Kal-El Tuck) potential usefulness. In popular retellings of the show, her name has been anglicized to “Chung.” This is evident in IMDb listings for the relevant episodes.

“Each location we went to and every historical figure we met left me in awe,” Kudrow shared with ComicBook. “I was genuinely captivated by figures like Madam Zheng. When she entered the scene, her costume took my breath away. I had already researched Madam Zheng beforehand, and meeting Katlyn Wong who portrayed her so brilliantly only added to my excitement and apprehension.”

As I, the intrepid gamer, embark on thrilling journeys with my quirky team of misfits, led by the captivating Lisa Kudrow from “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” we face formidable adversaries threatening our plunder and way of life. Our time-traveling escapades transport us to awe-inspiring realms of history, where we unearth hidden treasures. With Kevin as our trusted guide, we navigate through the creation of Stonehenge, witness the Trojan Horse in action, narrowly avoid dinosaurs during the prehistoric era, cause chaos during medieval times, experience the Ice Age, and delve into ancient civilizations and the Harlem Renaissance, among many other adventures.

In 1981, Gilliam saw significant early success with the release of “Time Bandits.” This film came after his contributions to Monty Python productions, including co-directing “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and having key behind-the-scenes roles on “Jabberwocky” and “Monty Python’s The Life of Brian.” His hits like “The Fisher King” and “12 Monkeys” followed. “Time Bandits” was part of Gilliam’s “Trilogy of Imagination,” which also consisted of “Brazil” and “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.” These films were not linked by a specific storyline but shared thematic similarities, much like Lindsay Anderson’s Mick Travis series or Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy.

The 10-episode series “Time Bandits,” helmed by Lisa Kudrow, is produced for Apple TV+ by Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content’s AC Studios, and MRC. Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Taika Waititi take on roles as executive producers, writers, and directors for certain episodes, with Clement and Morris sharing the title of co-showrunners. Additionally, Garrett Basch, Tim Coddington, and Jane Stanton are executive producers, with Stanton representing Handmade Films in this capacity.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that starting July 24, 2024, I’ll be able to binge-watch the new ten-episode series of “Time Bandits” right here on Apple TV+. The first two episodes will drop on Wednesday, with two fresh installments following each week, leading up to the grand finale on August 21. So mark your calendars, fellow gamers, and let’s embark on this exciting new adventure together!
