*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for the final episode of Little Disasters.*
Over the course of six gripping cinematic installments, I’ve been drawn into the tumultuous life of Jess, brilliantly portrayed by Diane Kruger. As her world unravels thread by thread, suspicion casts a dark shadow over her when it was revealed that her daughter Betsy suffered not just an injury, but a severe skull fracture, turning our shared cinematic journey into a nail-biting mystery.
Initially intended as a brief trip to the emergency room, Liz (Jo Joyner) found herself faced with a tough choice: contacting social services. This decision altered Jess’s visits with her sons to become monitored ones. Concerning Betsy, however, Jess’s apprehensions about her safety in the hospital persisted, causing her to consider stealing Betsy away.
In the upcoming final episode of the series, the enigma persists as Betsy stands trial for abduction and child mistreatment: the key question being, how did Betsy sustain her injuries? While Jess was briefly away from home to fetch medicine, Frankie was left in Betsy’s care. However, the mystery deepens when considering who knocked on the door during Jess’ absence.
Read on for a full breakdown of the finale of Little Disasters.
Little Disasters ending explained: Who hurt Betsy?

The story starts by revealing that Jess is accused of both child neglect and kidnapping. Evidence suggests that she left Frankie and Betsy unattended when she popped to the local store.
In the court proceeding, Liz consents to vouch for Jess’s character and offers her a place to stay with herself and Nick whenever she gets out on bail. However, the judge imposes restrictions that allow only a few monitored visits each week, which leaves Jess dissatisfied.
Since no court date has been established yet, Nick feels uneasy about Jessica staying at their home with the kids. However, Liz stands up for Jessica, explaining that it’s evident she’s struggling with postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Amidst Jess’s personal turmoil, it’s revealed that Rob (Stephen Campbell Moore) has grown increasingly cruel in his treatment towards his partner Mel (Emily Taaffe). Upon returning home, Mel discovers Rob giving a property valuation tour to an estate agent. Rob informs Mel that they will be forced to relocate from London to live with his parents due to financial struggles and the inability to afford living in the city anymore.
Rob claims he requires funds for his enterprise, a point Mel questions since she can’t find proof of his labor. When Mel declares she won’t relocate, Rob becomes more rude and threatens her by saying he’ll take the children and demonstrate her unfit motherhood. He mentions factors such as her lack of property ownership, personal finances, employment, and a house on the market. In a short span of time, the house is listed for sale, forcing Mel to inform the group about the move, which leaves them taken aback.
In the marital world of Charlotte (Shelley Conn) and Andrew (Patrick Baladi), there’s a storm brewing. Andrew discovers that on the night of Betsy’s accident, Ed (JJ Feild) was with Charlotte at a bar, drinking heavily. Andrew prefers to remain ignorant about their interactions, but unbeknownst to him, during this encounter, Charlotte admitted her feelings for Ed, a secret she hasn’t shared with Andrew.
In time, Charlotte reveals to Andrew that she too has halted the IVF egg retrieval process. Though they manage to reach a compromise, it’s evident that Charlotte doesn’t share the same emotional depth for Andrew as he does for her.
Liz assists Jess in arranging therapy and medication for her OCD and anxiety, and things appear to improve as she goes to stay at her family home following Betsy’s hospital discharge. However, what was meant to be a joyful reunion takes a turn for the worse when Frankie experiences a traumatic flashback to the day Jess left him with Betsy. Jess considers the possibility that Frankie might have been involved but doubts his ability to commit such an act.
It’s clear, actually, that Frankie has some information. On that particular day, he allowed someone into the house, and surprisingly, it was Rob.
A couple of days after, at the bustling summer carnival, we all gathered – it was supposed to be our final hurrah before Rob and Mel moved away. The air was filled with laughter and camaraderie… that is, until I noticed a heated argument between Rob and Mel on the steps. Seeing this, I felt a pang in my heart, turned around, and quickly slipped away.
While pursuing Frankie, the group failed to locate him until Jess heard his sobs hidden behind a tree. Upon finding him, the group felt relieved but noticed that Frankie was distraught, still crying and agitated. However, when Ed passed Betsy to Rob, Frankie angrily yelled at him for touching his sister.
The group couldn’t find Frankie until Jess heard him cry from behind a tree. Once they found him, they were happy but Frankie was upset and crying. But when Ed gave Betsy to Rob, Frankie got angry and shouted at him for touching his sister.

In a flashback scene, it’s revealed that, after a tearful Frankie opens the door, it was Rob who unexpectedly showed up, claiming to be searching for Ed since he knew Ed usually finished work early on Fridays. However, Rob ended up causing harm to Betsy instead.
It appears once more that Rob’s primary intention is to talk finances with Ed. However, Frankie calls on him to aid in lifting Betsy so he can change her diaper. Rob complies and instructs Frankie to place the changing mat on the kitchen island counter, which he does. In the meantime, Frankie dashes off to fetch a fresh diaper for Betsy from her room, but Rob gets sidetracked, rummaging through Ed’s wallet in search of his credit card to potentially forge a signature for his record company agreement.
Frankie rushes in, thrilled to swap places with Betsy, but is shocked when he finds her tumbling off the counter onto the floor due to Rob not focusing on what he was doing. Later, we witness the scene following this mishap, where Rob scolds Frankie for causing the chaos and warns him against making such loud noises as he climbed the stairs.
After she had stopped sobbing, Rob determined that Betsy was alright, yet he solely assigned responsibility to young Frankie, explaining to him that it was still his plan to lift her from the crib to change her diaper regardless.
Currently, the group is stunned and enraged by Rob’s actions, suspecting that Jess might have harmed her own child. Liz contacts the police, and later, we find Frankie being interrogated in a interview room with a social worker. It’s also disclosed that Rob instructed Frankie to keep quiet about the matter, as he feared Jess could face imprisonment – something Rob evidently wanted to avoid. Moreover, Rob warned Frankie that if Jess went to prison, he would be left on his own.
After wrapping up his interview, Jess learns that all accusations against her have been dismissed, allowing her to leave freely. However, Rob may face potential charges for obstructing justice and misusing police resources, which could result in a two-year prison sentence, as Andrew informs Mel.
Towards the finale of the episode, it is revealed that the interviews where characters seemed to ‘break the fourth wall’ were actually conducted by the social worker handling Jess’s case. She informs Jess that her case will be closed, implying she’s a capable mother. The scene changes to show it’s Betsy’s birthday, and we see the group gathering for a picnic, except for Rob. Life appears to return to its usual pace.
