Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Was “Five Pieces of Hell” for Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler will once again portray Stoick the Vast in the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon“, and he has spoken about the distinct challenges encountered during the production process. In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the actor joked when questioned about his beard’s authenticity. He confessed that putting it on and taking it off daily was an ordeal.

Butler, who played Stoick in the original ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ back in 2010 and has continued with his role in both sequels, short films, and TV specials, stated that the experience was akin to five pieces of hell. He explained that each day required numerous hours of work, and even more time just to put on the costume. Given that he’s the only original cast member reprising his role in the live-action remake, he offers a unique perspective on the process and the reasons behind its creation.

In other words, “Butler stated that when something is animated, you can’t actually dwell within that realm,” he continued, “However, by participating in the live-action adaptation, you find yourself immersed in the Viking village and the arenas. It’s an entirely new dimension.

Additionally, Butler shared that his costume collectively weighed around 90 pounds, but it wasn’t sufficient to shield him from the cold during filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He commended his fellow actors and crew members for enduring challenging conditions, and confirmed that he has already viewed the completed project. To him, the effort was worthwhile as it resulted in a “remarkable” movie.

In this imaginative setting reminiscent of historical cultures like the Vikings, How to Train Your Dragon unfolds. The story revolves around Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, initially voiced by Jay Baruchel and now portrayed by Mason Thames, who breaks free from his traditional dragon-slaying responsibilities and instead develops a friendship with one. This popular movie is inspired by a series of children’s books written by British author Cressida Cowell, but it has since expanded and developed its own unique narrative.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer magnitude of this franchise that has taken the world by storm. From TV adaptations to graphic novels, video games, and even a stage play, it’s left an indelible mark on a generation and amassed a fortune in the process. However, when word got out about a live-action remake, some of us skeptics couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, pondering if this timeless story would resonate just as deeply in a fresh medium.

With Butler’s heartfelt approval, some doubts might be alleviated. The much-anticipated release of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ will take place in theaters on June 13, 2025. Meanwhile, the original animated movie is currently available for streaming on Max.
