Live-Action Tangled Remake Happening at Disney (Will Zachary Levi Appear?)

As a long-time Disney enthusiast who has witnessed the magical transformation of animated classics into live-action masterpieces, I am nothing but thrilled about the upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled! The original film holds a special place in my heart, and the thought of experiencing this beloved tale once more, albeit with a modern twist, is simply enchanting.

Disney is set to release its upcoming live-action version of The Lion King: Mufasa this month, yet it isn’t the only live-action adaptation in the works. One such project is the charming Tangled, and as per recent reports from Deadline, Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is currently discussing terms to direct the film. At present, no casting decisions have been made, although it seems unlikely that the original cast members like Mandy Moore (Rapunzel) and Zachary Levi (Flynn) will return for this new version.

As per the latest updates, this upcoming live-action version seems to be closely modeled after the 2010 original. The script for this project was penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, renowned for her work on Thor: Love and Thunder, and she’s also involved in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot by Sony. Kristin Burr of Burr! Productions is overseeing production alongside Lucy Kitada (The Baby-Sitters Club).

2010 saw the successful debut of the animated film Tangled, earning over $591 million globally and $200 million in the US alone. The movie continues to be well-regarded, holding a Certified Fresh rating of 89% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 87%. However, since its initial release, there hasn’t been much expansion or development within the Tangled franchise.

The movie got both a Tangled Ever After mini-movie and an animated series called Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure on Disney Channel, and the character has appeared in various other Disney productions such as the amusing Disney Princess scene in Wreck It Ralph and the newly launched Disney Dreamlight Valley. Although there were rumors about a sequel animation, it never came to fruition, making this new development the most significant since the initial film.

Regarding Levi, though it’s unlikely he’ll take on the role again in the live-action version, he once suggested who might be suitable for the part of Flynn. In an interview with ET about Harold and the Purple Crayon, Levi indicated that Timothée Chalamet could potentially play Flynn if the live-action role came to fruition. He commented, “I guess he’s getting every other job, so maybe it’s Timothée Chalamet? Unfortunately, I feel a bit too old — and I don’t know all the younger actors who could fit the bill.

Levi shared that he wouldn’t act as Flynn again in a live-action remake, but he’d enjoy having a lively guest appearance alongside Moore, and he has specific roles in mind that he thinks would suit them well. “I think it could be entertaining if Mandy and I played Rapunzel’s parents,” Levi suggested. “I believe that would make for a fun little cameo for us to briefly appear.

Levi expressed his immense pride in the movie he was part of, saying, ‘I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to contribute.’ He confessed that his dreams revolved around being in a Disney animated musical, and now, not only has he achieved that, but he believes it ranks among the finest productions of its kind.

As a passionate film enthusiast, much like many others, I couldn’t help but feel disheartened when a sequel didn’t materialize. However, the opportunity to rejoin Moore in an animated series on Disney Channel for three years was nothing short of exhilarating! With rumors swirling about a live-action adaptation, I can’t help but feel excited and eagerly anticipate how it will all unfold.
