Lizzo’s Inspiring Body Transformation Journey to Self-Love and Health

Lizzo simply figured it was about damn time to start feeling better.

Although a significant aspect of her successful, award-winning persona as ‘Big Grrrl’ involved embracing and celebrating herself wholeheartedly in terms of appearance, voice, and movement, the artist formerly known as Melissa Jefferson recognized the need for certain modifications to enhance her overall health, from the top of her head down to her toes.

In a TikTok post from May 2023, she shared that her motivation for starting exercise was to improve her mental health and self-image. She mentioned that she wanted to achieve a balanced mental state and avoid feelings of shame and disgust when looking at herself in the mirror. However, she clarified that through exercise, she found it helped change her perspective rather than physically transforming her body.

As Lizzo embarked on Pilates and strength training, coupled with frequent walks, her body naturally evolved over time (originally for back healing, but later becoming routine).

In a TikTok posted in February 2024, she shared that she enjoys walking because, by the end of it, she tends to forget about the stress, anxiety, physical tension, or anger she was feeling earlier.

However, just like Lizzo who celebrates her birthday on April 27 (turning 37), has made it clear that she was already working out long before her fame skyrocketed with the success of her 2019 album “Cuz I Love You.

In her TikTok video posted in June 2020, she explained that she’s been exercising regularly for the past five years. What might be unexpected to some listeners is that she’s not doing it to achieve a specific body type that others might desire. Instead, she’s working out to reach her personal ideal body type. And as far as what her ideal body type is, she made it clear that it’s none of anyone else’s business.

Yet, as Lizzo’s fame soared to new heights, she found herself increasingly subjected to intense scrutiny – not just regarding her physical appearance, but also her professional endeavors. This unwelcome attention became a constant companion in her journey towards success.

Initially, as people had previously scrutinized her appearance, she also encountered criticism from those who felt that her weight loss journey contradicted her body-positive image. This is reminiscent of Adele’s experience when she shed 100 pounds over two years, causing some fans to express disapproval. As Adele explained in an interview with British Vogue in 2021, “I can understand why some women particularly were upset. I was a visual representation for many women. But I’m still the same person.

As a die-hard fan, let me tell you, even Lizzo – the queen of self-love – felt the burden of carrying her physical form from time to time. She shared with the New York Times in March 2024 that she doesn’t always revel in the love for her body daily. Instead, she candidly admitted that feelings towards one’s body fluctuate each day. Some days, she cherishes her body deeply, and other times, she doesn’t feel entirely positive about it.

She articulated that her preference for the concept of “body neutrality” stems from it being a more contemporary method for finding contentment with one’s physical self.

She mentioned that she makes it a point daily to fill her body with affection, and there’s not a single day she regrets going for a walk or practicing Pilates.

Lizzo’s ongoing journey towards fitness serves as an inspiring spectacle, with the multi-talented artist demonstrating in a tangible way that nurturing both mental and physical wellness represents the highest expression of self-care.

She expressed during the April 7th episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast: “I’ve discovered a sense of self,” she said. “I’ve adopted a lifestyle that truly suits me, and I find myself thinking, ‘I can sustain this.’ Additionally, I’ve developed a fresh viewpoint on nutrition and the underlying principles of cardio exercises and weight-lifting.

Lizzo openly admitted that for roughly a year and a half, she embarked on a deliberate weight loss journey.

She openly discussed in a January TikTok that she had reduced 16% of her body fat, feeling fantastic about it. However, she emphasized in the video, “At the conclusion of my weight loss journey, I won’t be considered thin by any stretch of the imagination. I will still be categorized as morbidly obese according to BMI and internet trolls will continue to label me ‘big backed.’ But I will be content.

Standing at 5 feet 10 inches tall, this artist seems genuinely content while showcasing items from her Yitty swimwear and shapewear collection. She’s also been spotted in a variety of form-fitting outfits as she prepares for the launch of her fifth studio album titled “Love in Real Life.

Though she may be done using that other L-word.

She explained to Shetty that the burden she no longer carries isn’t merely about losing weight or being physical. Rather, it’s about all the things she has let go of to reach this stage, and she doesn’t wish to label it as a loss. Instead, she wants to express her feelings in the most body-positive manner possible, avoiding any negative connotations.

Lizzo has shared that she’s been in on “intentional weight release journey” since 2023.

That same year, she was involved in a lawsuit brought forward by some of her previous backup dancers, who claimed that she established a “toxic, aggressive work atmosphere” and body-shamed them, allegations which she strongly disputed.

In her Instagram post, she expressed that dedication and excellence often go hand in hand. Sometimes, tough choices must be made, but her aim is always to ensure no one feels uneasy or unappreciated; everyone remains a vital contributor to the team.

She shared that she’s frequently experienced the pain of being judged based on her physical appearance, and emphasized that she would never evaluate or dismiss an employee due to their weight.

During the period between her albums, the artist behind “About Damn Time” shared in August 2024 that she would be taking a break, or as she put it, a “gap year,” to prioritize her personal well-being.

Lizzo admittedly has her ups and downs when it comes to her body.

In an interview with The New York Times back in April 2024, I confessed that I don’t claim to love my body each and every day. Instead, I want to share the honest truth: the way we feel about our bodies is subject to change, moment by moment, day by day. Some days, I find myself deeply appreciating my body, while on others, I may not always feel completely positive about it.

On September 18, 2024, Lizzo shared a TikTok video featuring her transformation. Initially, she appeared in a black two-piece swimsuit, followed by a quick transition to a gray bodysuit.

As she captioned the clip, “Fine both ways.”

Translation: Lizzo jokingly commented on Instagram, “After 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit, I’m now facing Ozempic accusations,” posted on September 20.

On September 27th, the Grammy-winning artist was spotted having lunch at Nobu while donning a semi-transparent black-and-white dress designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, accompanied by a sleek black bodysuit. She accessorized her ensemble with a leather trench coat casually slung over her shoulders, oversized silver hoop earrings, and dark sunglasses.

She confided on TikTok on Sept. 30, 2024, that she indulged excessively the day before, and it’s left her feeling quite guilty. While discussing her experiences, she noted: “I’m making an effort to tell myself my body requires nourishment. If my body is entitled to comfort, then so is my mind.

The artist has been focusing on fitness inspiration for TikTok, with a video detailing her strategies for powering through workouts.

In October 2024, the star, dripping with sweat, shared that she was using a Stairmaster at a more challenging level than usual. To prevent herself from giving up prematurely, she adjusted the speed to something less intense. She added that when one feels like quitting, it’s often because they’ve been pushing themselves too hard. Her advice was not to give up, but rather, to be kinder to oneself and ease up a bit.

Lizzo announced on Instagram on January 25, 2025 that she had achieved her weight loss target. She hadn’t seen that number on the scale since 2014! This serves as a motivation that you can accomplish anything if you set your mind to it. Now, it’s time for fresh objectives!
