Localthunk Bans AI Art Following Balatro Community Erotica Debacle

It turns out there’s a group of people who appreciate risqué Balatro art and related erotica, which we were unaware of until now, and you should be too. A moderator from both the formal Balatro subreddit and an informal NSFW Balatro community has updated the community’s label, leading some to mistakenly believe that PlayStack endorses AI artwork usage. However, this is absolutely not the case.

The enigmatic figure behind Balatro’s development, Localthunk, found it necessary to intervene when a heated argument about AI among two subreddits led to an unusual internet conflict. This escalation occurred after the moderator appeared to act independently by asserting that AI-generated art was acceptable and should be used, despite receiving numerous downvotes for these controversial posts. The community reacted strongly in outrage.

One observer expressed disappointment: “Isn’t it asking too much for a lively subreddit about an enjoyable game that isn’t controlled by an overly-affectionate AI enthusiast?…It seems like it is, doesn’t it.” However, it appears that indeed it is, as the mature moderator, Localthunk, had to take action, banning the moderator and prohibiting any and all AI art in the subreddit.

In this subreddit, a moderator has updated the flair, suggesting that Playstack endorses AI-generated art. This is not the case for either Playstack or me; we do not endorse AI as ‘art’. I personally don’t utilize it in my game and believe it causes significant harm to artists of all kinds. The actions taken by this moderator do not align with our sentiments regarding this topic. Consequently, we have decided to remove the moderator from the team.
