LoL patch 14.21 rundown

LoL patch 14.21 rundown

As a seasoned League of Legends player with over a decade under my belt, I must admit that patch 14.21 has left me both exhilarated and bewildered. On one hand, I’m thrilled to see Swain receiving a much-needed gameplay update, as he’s been a staple champion in my rotation since his release. However, on the other, the adjustments to my beloved Taric and Yone have left me questioning the developers’ sanity (or perhaps their love for tank supports and duelists).

In the latest update 14.21, Swain undergoes significant changes in gameplay, adjustments for balance, and introduces the newest addition to the Dark Star cosmetic collection.

Significantly, this update introduces substantial adjustments to the Bounty mechanism. It modifies the system by moving away from kill/death sequences and gold accumulation based on farming. Now, champions acquire bounties according to the overall gold they have amassed.

Instead, the system won’t feature unique gold gains tied to particular champions (such as Twisted Fate’s passive, Draven’s Adoration stacks, or Pyke’s ultimate). This design prevents these champions from being unduly penalized.

Similarly, the rewards for achieving Objective Bounties may change. Now, these Objective Bounties are more likely to appear depending on the disparity in gold and towers/dragons captured. Yet, they will become less active when a team begins to mount a comeback.

Swain gameplay update

Ultimately, the key figure for modifications is Swain. The intention is to significantly enhance Swain’s autonomy by upgrading his spells and providing him with greater control in individual lanes.

  • In terms of his base stats, Swain has worse health regen and mana, but better mana regen.
  • His passive also linearly scales with levels instead of following specific level break-points.
  • His Q (Death’s Hand) has less mana cost and more damage on a single bolt. For the maximum bolt calculation, it has worse base damage but improved AP scaling
  • His W (Vision of Empire) has worse base damage but higher AP ratio. Its slow duration is slightly shorter, but the slow is significantly stronger. The reveal is now 6 seconds at all ranks
  • His E (Nevermore) has a longer cooldown at early levels, and costs more mana. The missile is faster and has a larger hitbox. It has slightly worse base damage but better AP scaling, and its detonation damage is much higher.
  • His R (Demonic Ascension) receives changes to its damage and healing. Most importantly, its Flare damage cast can now be cast repeatedly every eight seconds (up to 100 times).

LoL patch 14.21 item, rune, and other changes

In simpler terms, there have been relatively fewer alterations to items and runes following the significant updates in the recent past.

For items:

  • Sorcerer’s Shoes get a nerf that brings them more in line with other boots. They grant 12 Magic Penetration, down from 15
  • Blade of the Ruined King gets a nerf to its “% of Target HP” passive. Melee attacks deal 8% of the target current HP, while ranged deals 5% (down from 10% and 6% respectively)

As for runes, the following champions receive updates to their Recommended Runes pages:

  • Azir
  • Rengar
  • Twisted Fate

Finally, Lethal Tempo gets a buff, now granting 6% melee attack speed per stack (up from 5%).

Rounding things out are the new skins for the Dark Star skin line:

  • Dark Cosmic Diana
  • Dark Star Zoe
  • Dark Star Kai’Sa
  • Dark Star Sylas
  • Dark Star Yorick
  • Prestige Dark Cosmic Diana
