Longlegs star recalls ‘absolutely freaking terrifying’ encounter with Nicolas Cage

As a seasoned movie connoisseur with a penchant for the macabre, I must admit that Longlegs has left an indelible mark on my horror-loving heart. This chilling masterpiece, directed by the enigmatic Oz Perkins, is undoubtedly one of the most terrifying films to grace our screens in recent memory, and Nicolas Cage‘s haunting portrayal as the twisted serial killer Longlegs serves as the icing on this spooky cake.

As Halloween approaches, numerous terrifying movies are hitting theaters this month. However, it’s doubtful that any of them will surpass Longlegs as the most frightening new release of 2024.

The film by Oz Perkins resonated deeply with audiences upon its July release, earning impressive earnings at the box office and generating an abundance of glowing critiques that underscored its intense horror.

Indeed, one factor that left a significant impact on numerous spectators was Nicholas Cage’s convincing portrayal of the enigmatic and malevolent serial killer at the heart of the movie. Interestingly, it appears that it wasn’t just the audience who found his acting hard to digest.

She added: “What we’d been apprised of before his arrival on set that morning was that, because he was going to be so deep into character, he wasn’t going to be doing a lot of small talk.

In that situation, he was extremely kind and considerate. For instance, when I was tied up and laying on the floor, he checked on my well-being, ensuring I wasn’t injured and neither was he causing me harm.

As a cinephile, I found myself captivated by the actor’s performance. Off-screen, he didn’t maintain that powerful voice all the time, instead, he remained quiet and intensely focused, channeling his energy effectively.

In the movie, Witt, who portrayed Ruth, Lee Harker’s religious mother, noted that Cage consistently demonstrated the same level of intensity in his role, even when the camera wasn’t focused on him. She particularly admired his dedication to the part.

I noticed consistently, it was always at 110 – a testament to his exceptional talent as an actor, truly selfless and magnificent.

Indeed, I’d never encountered him adorned in makeup before. Neither had I witnessed any makeup trials, and to be honest, his new voice was a surprise to me as well.

The first time I encountered that voice, it happened under camera surveillance. To be completely truthful, there was minimal need for me to feign fear as I was genuinely petrified by his presence!

Besides finding one part of creating Longlegs a bit unnerving, Witt has not yet viewed the movie to discover its final outcome.

She explained that the emotions she expressed seemed extremely gloomy to her, and she didn’t feel comfortable looking at them,” she said.

The scene seemed to linger with me, providing a powerful emotional release and an unusual sensation as if I was observing from beyond myself. Yet, I’m reluctant to watch how it appeared to others. However, I’m eager to continue watching the entire film, especially the parts where I’m not featured.

Regardless if they had watched the movie or not, it appears that being a part of it must have been incredibly beneficial and fulfilling for Witt.

Moreover, she admitted that the movie has significantly influenced her daily feelings.

She expressed feeling more liberated as an individual, “I believe there was genetic material from distant ancestors within me, relatives possibly unknown to me, whose weighty history, spanning many generations ago, seemed to burden my lineage. Somehow, this heavy heritage has been purged, set free, and no longer affects me.

Additionally, I held that burden with me for a while. Thus, I believe Ruth brought an incredible blessing to our family tree. The burden was lifted, allowing something lovely to be permanently captured on film due to the pain that had once existed.

“So yes, I feel much freer having played Ruth!”

Longlegs is now available on digital, Blu-ray and DVD.
