Look Back, Anime's Top Film of 2024, Is Dominating Rotten Tomatoes

As a hardcore anime fan with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Look Back is a must-watch masterpiece! Having grown up reading Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work and being captivated by his unique storytelling, it’s no surprise to me that this film has garnered rave reviews across the board.

Tatsuki Fujimoto may primarily be recognized for crafting Denji and his devil-filled universe in Chainsaw Man, but this manga artist is also renowned for creating heartfelt short stories. One such story, Look Back, has been transformed into an anime film and premiered in Japan this summer. Prepared to captivate North America on October 4th, the movie has already garnered attention from Western critics and has made a strong initial impact. On Rotten Tomatoes, the animated venture has secured a “100% rating”, suggesting that this anime film could be one of the top-tier productions in its genre.

If you haven’t encountered the tale titled “Look Back,” it initially surfaced in 2021, revolving around two ambitious manga artists named Fujino and Kyomoto. At first, they were fierce competitors, but eventually, they supported each other’s artistic growth. Their goal was to create a groundbreaking manga series, but their plans were overshadowed by an appalling tragedy that struck the duo. The narrative delves into the essence of passion and the decisions one must make when grappling with a monumental loss in their personal lives.

Look Back is Fresh

The movie “Look Back” may be the creation of Tatsuki Fujimoto, however, it wasn’t Studio MAPPA that produced the anime film, contrary to what some might expect given their work on “Chainsaw Man”. Instead, Studio Durian stepped up to adapt Kyomoto and Fujino’s story. Thanks to promotional materials, fans have been able to witness how this studio breathed new life into Fujimoto’s work. At the time this article was written, only around eleven reviews from major outlets were available, yet they have been giving the film top marks or near-perfect scores.

Despite receiving excellent reviews, the duration of the film might surprise anime enthusiasts as it runs for approximately 60 minutes instead of the usual 90 minutes or more. Distributed by GKIDs, the release date for home video has not been announced yet. Given its critical acclaim, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s latest anime adaptation is expected to create a significant impact in the medium.

The Other Works of Tatsuki Fujimoto

As a devoted reader and admirer of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work, I can confidently say that his stories, such as “Goodbye, Eri” and “Fire Punch,” have truly captivated my attention. These masterpieces seamlessly intertwine heart-stopping action with emotionally stirring moments that leave me in tears. Although there’s no official confirmation yet, I have faith that these two mesmerizing manga projects will eventually make their way onto our screens as anime adaptations, given Fujimoto’s impressive track record and the demand from dedicated anime fans like myself.

Regarding the series “Chainsaw Man,” there hasn’t been an announcement about a second season for Denji and his team of devil hunters, given the popularity of the first season. However, good news comes with it as the franchise is set to debut its first movie titled “Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc“. As of now, Studio MAPPA hasn’t specified a release date for this film, but if the success of season one serves as any benchmark, it’s bound to be a blockbuster hit once it hits cinemas.
