Andy Serkis recently shared news about the forthcoming Lord of the Rings prequel movie, known as “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” and disclosed that its scheduled launch has been pushed back.
At Fan Expo Vancouver 2025, as mentioned by The Direct, Serkis was queried about the advancement of the movie in relation to its expected 2026 launch date during his speech.
Serkis clarified that the release, which was initially planned for December 2026, has been pushed back to December 2027. Currently, they are just starting the writing phase.
Later this year, we’ll be getting ready for something. This preparation process can take around six to seven months. After that, we plan to start production next year. Given these timelines, our projected release date is December 2027.
In May 2024, it was officially disclosed that the quest for Gollum would commence, with Andy Serkis reprising his role as Gollum and taking on the directorial responsibilities as well. The movie will be manufactured under the watchful eye of the original franchise’s director, Peter Jackson.
The upcoming movie is planned as the initial installment in a fresh series of films taking place in Middle-earth. As stated by David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, it will delve into previously untold narratives.
In his own words, Sir Ian McKellen expressed a possibility of reprising the role of Gandalf, should an opportunity arise. However, he clarified that as of June 2024, no script has been prepared, no offer has been extended, and no plans have been set in motion for such a return.
Simultaneously, another endeavor in Middle-earth, Season 3 of Amazon’s The Rings of Power, has been confirmed, ready for production.
In Season 3, we find ourselves significantly ahead in time from where we left off in Season 2. This season unfolds amidst the intense Elven-Sauron war, as the Dark Lord Sauron is tirelessly working to create The One Ring, a powerful artifact that could tip the scales of this conflict in his favor and enable him to overpower Middle-earth.
