Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Premiere Recap

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating Middle-earth on my console, I must say that diving back into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien through “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 is nothing short of a dream come true. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment since the cliffhanger ending of Season 1, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

The second season of “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, transporting viewers back into J.R.R. Tolkien’s magical realm. At the end of Season 1, shadows started to fall across Middle-earth as Sauron emerged in disguise, setting his sinister plan in motion to control every living being. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and her companion Elrond (Robert Aramayo) uncovered a shocking truth: their fellowship member Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) was actually Sauron disguised as a man, and the three Rings of Power created by Elven-smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) could be tainted with corruption, threatening the very existence of the Elves.

Stepping into the next chapter of The Rings of Power, I find myself standing at a critical juncture, where only Galadriel and Elrond possess the knowledge that Sauron has made his chilling comeback and threatens to taint the very rings we hold dear. Join me as we uncover the events that unfold in the wake of this shocking revelation…

The Rings of Power Season 2, Episodes 1 Recap: “Elven Kings Under the Sky”

The Season 2 premiere opens with a flashback to the beginning of the Second Age of Middle-earth, following the defeat of the dark lord Morgoth. Morgoth’s top lieutenant, Sauron, rallies the Orc race together in the dark region of Forodwaith for his coronation as the new dark lord, taking the crown for himself. However, the “father” of the orcs, Adar, betrays Sauron, impaling him with the spiked crown and letting the orcs descend upon him, hacking the would-be new king to pieces. Upon his “death,” Sauron lets out a burst of energy that leaves Farodwaith sheathed in ice, and the orcs reeling. Saruon’s body vanishes, but his dark essence remains in that place; it takes centuries for Sauron to pull his physical form back together by consuming rats and other vermin, achieving loose primordial form as a pile of black ooze. That creature eventually escapes the depths of the mountains and slithers its way out into Middle-earth, until it comes upon a woman traveler and consumes her, allowing Sauron to take on the form “Halbrand.” Other travelers passing by offer Halbrand a place with them – including an old man wearing the seal of the former Southlands king. While traveling by ship, Sauron’s evil calls to a behemoth of the sea which wrecks the vessel, by sparing the dark lord, creating the perfect cover for when he is discovered by Galadriel and co., during the events of Season 1.

In the current timeline, the story unfolds after a rift develops among the elves in Lindon, caused by the forging of three elven rings. Elrond strongly opposes their use due to his concerns about their potential corruption. King Gil-galad pressures Galadriel to reveal the truth, and she confesses that Halbrand is Sauron, who had deceived both her and Celebrimbor into creating the rings. Both the king and Galadriel believe the rings could be used for good, such as halting a decay that could end the existence of elves in Middle-earth. Elrond secretly takes the rings and escapes to Grey Havens, where he meets Cirdan, an ancient and wise elf. Cirdan intends to dispose of the rings before Gil-galad and Galadriel can find him, but upon holding them, his judgment is clouded by their influence, causing him to return them to Lindon. He keeps one ring for himself, while Galadriel and Gil-galad keep the other two. The combined power of the three rings halts the decay, extending the elves’ stay in Middle-earth; however, Elrond remains doubtful about their decision.

In the first episode, we have subplots featuring Saruon disguised as Halbrand who visits the fiery realm of Mordor and clashes with Adar. He deceitfully promises Adar that he, as the King of the Southlands, can track down Sauron hidden among the Elves and expose him for Adar to eliminate. Adar detains Halbrand in a dungeon, subjecting him to torture, but eventually agrees to the ruse. Meanwhile, Sauron departs Mordor, having secretly sown corruption there. Simultaneously, The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and his Harfoot companion Nori Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh) become lost in desolate lands en route to Rhun. It is discovered that Nori’s friend Poppy Proudfellow (Megan Richards) is trailing them, while ominous figures wearing gold-skull masks also follow closely behind.

The Rings of Power Season 2 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
