When Mary Kay Letourneau, who was involved in a controversial case, passed away at the age of 58 after a quiet struggle with cancer, it marked the close of an unsettling chapter.
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our cherished Mary on July 6th, 2020. After bravely battling stage IV cancer for six months, she found peace in her final moments. Her eldest son, Steven Letourneau Jr., shared this heart-wrenching news in a statement. Mary fought courageously against this dreadful illness. In the same vein as she faced her challenges, we now ask for privacy and understanding as we grieve and navigate the road ahead, united as Mary’s extended family.
I am a mother to three children from my first marriage with Steve Letourneau, as well as two daughters with Vili Fualaau, who I had the unfortunate encounter during his second grade year when I was his teacher.
They tied the knot on May 20, 2005, but chose to part ways in 2019. Back in 2017, when the news of their split was first announced, Letourneau’s attorney and friend David Gehrke commented to People that he wasn’t taken aback by their marriage, and similarly, he isn’t surprised now, given today’s times, that they are separating.
The long-term, globally captivating bond between them began with a criminal act for which Letourneau was imprisoned, spanning several decades.
They welcomed their first child, Audrey Lokelani Fualaau, together during a time when she was standing trial for alleged child rape. Later, while Letourneau was incarcerated, their second daughter, Georgia Fualaau (now a mother herself), was born.
In 2004, Letourneau expressed on CNN’s Larry King Live, “I had concerns that this might be problematic, as it was quite unconventional,” she stated, “However, I didn’t fully grasp the severity of my actions at the time. I truly didn’t realize it was a felony. It simply…it seemed so far from…so unlike what was considered normal.
In 1996, Mary Kay Schmitz, known as Letourneau, was a beloved and respected teacher at Shorewood Elementary School in Burien, Washington. She had been married to Steve Letourneau since 1985, having chosen to tie the knot while they were students at Arizona State after she became pregnant. Together, they raised four children.
John Schmitz, who was previously a Republican state senator and congressman for Orange County, was discovered in 1982 to have fathered two children outside of his marriage with a former student from when he taught at Santa Ana College. It was revealed that this affair began in 1973. Schmitz passed away in 2001, having been married to Mary for 47 years.
In a conversation with People magazine in 1998, women’s rights advocate and attorney Gloria Allred, who knew the couple, stated that John and Mary were extremely rigid in their beliefs and quite oppressive. Allred suggested that Mary Kay may never have felt at ease discussing personal matters with them.
Letourneau had been acquainted with Fualaau since he was eight years old, during which time they were both in the same second-grade class. His parents were divorced, and he resided primarily with his mother, Soona. At that point, his father was serving a prison sentence for armed robbery and had been married five times previously. Fualaau had seventeen siblings and Letourneau knew not only him but also other family members as well.
At thirteen, Fualaau had recently completed sixth grade and previously attended Letourneau’s class. Their romantic involvement commenced as he was attending an art class with her at a community college during the summer. She nurtured his artistic talents in drawing and poetry writing.
Letourneau admitted that her husband and she were already separated when the affair started. Even so, she acknowledged that she might have still harbored feelings, but would have refrained from acting upon them if she had known it was a criminal offense. She explained the gradual development of the affair as “an accumulation of countless instances that simultaneously created something incredibly beautiful and terrifying.” In 1996, she experienced a miscarriage and subsequently fell into depression. She stated that she wasn’t seeking to fall in love at that time.
Later on, she shared with Larry King that she and Fualaau possessed a highly compatible sense of humor and held a remarkably similar outlook on life.
Fualaau initiated his teenage strategies towards his cousin following a wager, with the goal of winning her affections. Later recounting this to Dateline, he said, “I used to enjoy planning the next day, thinking about what I would do, what I would say, what surprise I would leave on her desk.” He rejected being labeled as a victim.
In the year 2018 on Australia’s Sunday Night program, he reminisced, “Mary and I grew quite close, and to be honest, I momentarily overlooked the wager.
One fateful night, I happened to find myself seated in Letourneau’s vehicle, conveniently parked by the marina. However, a swift phone conversation with Fualaau’s mom clarified that my cherished protege was safely in the care of a trusted individual, alleviating any concerns I might have had.
As he shared with me, there was no relationship of any kind between them. Later, when speaking to the Seattle Times, my mother conveyed this information. Trusting her implicitly, I believed I could place my son in her care.
In February 1997, Le tourneau’s spouse found the evidence of her abuse hidden among her stored love letters. At the time, he wasn’t aware that she was already six months along with their pregnancy.
Her husband’s family member informed the police about her, leading to Letourneau’s arrest on charges of child rape. However, her claims that the young one pursued her, she was unaware of the illegality of her actions, and they were deeply in love failed to convince either the court or public opinion.
In 1997, Letourneau explained to the Seattle Times, there existed a deep bond, an intuition, a shared essence, and a comprehension between us that deepened with time. It was akin to the connection you share with a sibling—a bond that lasts a lifetime. However, she admitted, “I didn’t understand what it signified.” And certainly, it wasn’t sexual in the beginning. “I believed that one day he might wed my daughter,” she continued.
It seems that the affair between the two was not entirely hidden from the school community, as suggested by Gregg Olsen, author of ‘If Loving You Is Wrong’. According to him, a janitor discovered them in a bathroom stall on one occasion and other teachers observed them kissing. Fualaau admitted during a court deposition that they once sneaked up to have sex on the roof of Letourneau’s house at night.
She admitted her guilt for two counts of second-degree child molestation, apologizing to the judge, “Your honor, I did something unjustifiable, both ethically and legally. It was a mistake. I am sorry. I promise it won’t happen again. Please, please extend your assistance. Help us, help everyone involved.
She received a prison sentence that suspended for 89 months, with six months mandatory jail time, taking into account the time she had already served. On January 2, 1998, she was released from jail and as part of her release conditions, she was instructed to undergo counseling and maintain a distance from Fualaau, who was looking after Audrey at that time.
A mere month after the incident, police found the 36-year-old woman and 14-year-old boy in a car outside her house. The vehicle was loaded with boys’ garments, infant clothes, photos, groceries, personal papers, a safe containing $6,200, and near the gas pedal, her passport was discovered. It was reported that she had bought a pager for Fualaau to communicate with her.
The therapist reported to Child Protective Authorities that Fualaau had rekindled their sexual involvement.
After being returned to detention, Letourneau was kept under close observation due to a potential suicide risk. Her legal representative contended that her erratic behavior stemmed from undiagnosed bipolar disorder and the cessation of her medication upon release from prison, leading her to engage in reckless actions.
David Gehrke, her lawyer, stated on MSNBC that everyone had predicted this outcome. We weren’t taken aback by it. Whether it’s genuine affection, an unhealthy infatuation, or fixation, you can’t begin treatment one week and declare, “You’re cured.” Fualaau was the one who made the initial contact, according to him.
In March, it came to light that Letourneau was expecting her and Fualaau’s second child, while she was already in prison, serving out the initial sentence.
In my own words as a dedicated follower, I shared during that time that she was disappointed the news about her pregnancy surfaced so early. It appears someone from the prison may have accessed her medical records and disclosed the information before it was due, without her consent. I didn’t reveal who the father is, but I do confirm that I am aware of the pregnancy.
Gehrke noted that she is worried about the impact on her future, her family, and her reputation. He further stated that it’s yet another hardship for everyone involved.
In March 1998, Steve divorced her and relocated with their four children to Alaska. Speaking to People magazine, he expressed his feelings as being almost speechless when Letourneau was imprisoned again. He likened the situation to tearing a family photo off the wall and discarding it. The children, he noted, were managing remarkably well, given their anger.
Georgia, their daughter, was born towards the end of the same year at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor, WA. Later on, she resided with her sister Audrey under the care of Fualaau’s mother.
In the year 2000, two television films were produced that focused on the Letourneau scandal: “Unauthorized: The Mary Kay Letourneu Story” by Fox and “Mary Kay Letourneau: All American Girl” by USA. These productions starred Penelope Ann Miller in the role of the teacher who, unknowingly, attracted a large following of schoolboy admirers due to her controversial actions.
Years later, LeTourneau expressed regret over the sensationalized reporting of her case on A&E’s Biography, stating that the focus was primarily on shock value. She referred to this phenomenon as media chaos or a grisly spectacle, using terms like roadkill and blood to emphasize its gruesome nature.
For approximately seven and a half years while Letourneau was imprisoned, she had no visits or communication with Fualaau. One of the most difficult hardships she faced was not being permitted to attend her father’s funeral in 2001.
Letourneau got out of prison in August 2004.
Anne Bremner, the attorney and friend, shared with the AP that she desires to become a mother and also wishes to contribute positively as a responsible citizen.
On the eve of her release, Fualaau confided to Seattle’s KING 5 News that he is unsure about his current feelings, but added, “I guess you could say I’m a bit anxious. Yet, I am certain of one thing – I do love her.
While serving her prison term, Fualaau chose to leave high school, but in 2004 stated that he was pursuing his GED. He expressed this to People, explaining, “I was trying to distract my mind from everything. I was partying excessively, drinking far too much. There were numerous mornings with hangovers.” Unfortunately, his mother’s attempt to hold the school district accountable for negligence proved unsuccessful.
Two months following her freedom, Letourneau revealed to King during their initial post-release conversation that she and Fualaau were now engaged. They needed to seek court permission beforehand to terminate their restraining order.
Looking back at the events leading up to the scandal making headlines, Letourneau mentioned that neither she nor Fualaau ever contemplated not having the baby when she became pregnant for the first time. Instead, she motivated him to continue his education, while planning to take parental leave and embark on a fresh career path.
Inquired whether the children she met while being incarcerated had any information about current events, she clarified, “Well, they’ve been told their mother is in prison. Now, fortunately, their mom and dad are reunited. That’s the gist of it. I’ve even shared with my eldest that I’m serving a time-out.
Four of their older kids made annual visits from Alaska on four separate occasions. Susan, Gerhke’s spouse, frequently drove Audrey and Georgia to the penitentiary twice monthly to meet with her.
Letourneau stated on Larry King Live that she will work closely with her children to ensure a healthy growth during this challenging time. She emphasized her awareness of each child’s developmental stage and is providing support as needed. Although her younger children are in Alaska, she maintains close contact with them, and when appropriate, she will discuss their concerns with their father. She clarified that she has answered questions they have directly posed to her, but it hasn’t been suitable to engage the 10 and 12-year-olds at this moment.
Instead of describing her life as “tumultuous” like King did, Letourneau considered it to be “blessed”.
I’m in good health, my kids are healthy too, and I’m fortunate enough to still have my mother. My family is incredibly loving, and there’s Vili in our lives. At that moment, I wasn’t allowed to travel out of Washington without permission, but I could teach again – only not within the public school system.
43-year-old Letourneau and 21-year-old Fualaau exchanged vows on May 20, 2005, at a winery in Woodinville, Washington, under almost ordinary circumstances. They established gift registries at Williams Sonoma, Macy’s, and Tiffany. Their daughters served as the flower girls.
The attorney remarked on MSNBC’s The Abrams Report, saying, “They have a cozy beachfront property, and there’s always something interesting to see.” He added, “We think the young girls will find it fascinating as they can watch ships passing by, and occasionally, eagles may soar overhead.
Instead of staying put, they chose to reside in the Seattle region to bring up their children.
In 2009, when Fualaau expressed a desire to become a DJ, Letourneau organized a “Hot for Teacher” event at a bar where he was spinning tunes.
In 2014, it felt like a repeat of the past when Letourneau was arrested once more – this time for missing a court hearing, a year after being penalized for driving with a revoked license due to outstanding traffic fines. However, she settled the matter by paying the fine upon providing evidence of her renewed driver’s license.
Back in April 2015, prior to celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary, they had a chat with Barbara Walters for ABC News.
According to Letourneau, the event happened late at night, and it went beyond just a kiss during their first intimate encounter. She had believed that it would only go that far, but it turned out differently.
Fualaau stated, “Indeed, it was a significant shift in my life. Regrettably, I didn’t have the necessary assistance or backing from anyone, including family and friends. To be honest, my friends couldn’t support me because they were too young to understand parenthood, considering we were only 14 or 15 years old.
Finding it challenging not to communicate with Letourneau, the mother of my children, was indeed tough. If they had offered me alternative means of contact or given me a choice in the matter rather than simply saying, “You can’t speak to her anymore,” and I responded, “I truly wish to have a conversation with her, though.
The saga appeared to be coming to an end when Fualaau filed for a legal separation in May 2017.
Later on, he explained to Radar Online that things might not be as they seem. In reality, everything is going smoothly between them. The rumors you may have heard about their relationship are unfounded. Instead, his intention was to launch a new business venture, and he wanted to distance himself from any complications that could arise during a background check for the project.
In his explanation, Fualaau stated that when one intends to acquire a license, both parties involved undergo background checks. This means that if he chooses to participate, he too must obtain a license and go through the vetting process, as does a spouse. He noted that she has a past and a history.
Indeed, they were seen together not long after that. On an episode of A&E’s Autobiography in 2018, they both made an appearance, with Letourneau merely mentioning that they weren’t discussing the matter.
In a special episode of Australia’s Sunday Night in September 2018, when asked for advice to his younger self, Fualaau replied with a firm “Don’t go through with it!” He chuckled and continued, “I can’t say I regret my two daughters and the entire life I’ve already lived.
Regarding their parents’ relationship, Audrey, who will be 28 on May 23rd, 2025, expressed that she finds it understandable due to its unexpected nature. “It’s felt different because it wasn’t something that was emphasized much in our upbringing, so we’ve grown accustomed to it,” she added.
They viewed their mother as being quite disciplined, as Audrey shared an instance when mom removed the padding from one of her bras. On the other hand, their father feels remarkably youthful now that Audrey has reached adulthood, allowing him to go to bars. He’s more like a “buddy dad” to her.
And decades after the whole thing began, Letourneau hadn’t changed her story.
On Sunday Night, Letourneau stated, “I didn’t contemplate it; I didn’t.
Even though Letourneau maintains her belief that she was unjustly incarcerated, she explained her actions as follows: “In the circumstances at hand, I made what I thought was the best decision. However, upon reflection, I wished to retract my guilty plea when I became aware that I was manipulated and pressured into making it.
The whole thing wasn’t her idea, she continued to insist.
“Who was the boss?” she turned and asked Fualaau. “Who was the boss?”
“I don’t know what to say,” he said quietly. “Who was the boss?” she asked, louder.
He admitted that he was the one chasing after her. When she inquired if his boss was around at that time, he chuckled and declared, “This is absurd.” However, she persisted undeterred. “Very well, who was? Just tell me,” she pressed. To which he replied awkwardly, “I only knew what I knew back then.
As she continued to press, he said, “This is getting weird.”
In the 2023 movie “May December”, a rather awkward back-and-forth conversation contributed to a scene. Julianne Moore portrayed a woman married to a younger man, Charles Melton, whom she had served time for having a relationship with when he was a minor. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman played the actress who would depict her life in an upcoming biopic.
The film doesn’t directly focus on Letourneau and Fualaau, but everyone connected with its production has admitted that it was inspired by their story.
Samy Burch, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, clarified to The Hollywood Reporter in November 2023 that the details weren’t identical, but it’s important not to presume our dialogues took place in secret. Instead, he explained, these were simply starting points and a means for me to make emotional sense of something like this.
Fualaau, meanwhile, slammed the project as a “rip-off” of his ongoing experience.
He expressed to THR that he feels deeply hurt by the entire undertaking, and that the disregard shown towards him – who experienced a true narrative firsthand and continues to do so – is particularly distressing.
