Does he foresee death for creators by AI? That’s not exactly the perspective he expressed. Instead, Miller acknowledged that AI is becoming more sophisticated in the field of animation, which might impact the roles of human creators. However, he emphasized that it will always be essential to have a human touch in storytelling and creativity, ensuring the survival of creators and their unique abilities.
As a movie enthusiast, I recently found myself engaged in a conversation with Killian about AI’s role in animation. Specifically, he wondered if AI could be used ethically in the next seasons of Love, Death + Robots. Miller, who has made his mark in both live-action and animated productions, shared his thoughts:
“Absolutely, I can see the appeal and potential for AI in this field. Frankly, as a lover of sci-fi and someone intrigued by future advancements, I’m both anxious and exhilarated about it. Yet, I’m far from being a technophobe.
Initially working as a freelance illustrator, Miller later emphasized that he sees AI as a useful tool for reducing an artist or animator’s workload, not as something that will entirely replace them. To clarify further, the filmmaker stated, “My goal isn’t to replace artists in the process. Instead, I aim to strengthen the role of artists by enabling us to accomplish even more.
Miller Believes Responsible Use of A.I. Can Bring Animators Closer to the Art
As a passionate cinephile, I firmly believe that the judicious application of AI should primarily aim at reducing the tedious tasks for artists, thereby enabling us to focus more on our creative visions. Moreover, it should empower us to undertake grander, more daring productions that, due to their prohibitive budgets, have remained elusive until now.
Miller pointed out that it’s not necessary for a movie to cost $100 million to be visually stunning and of high quality. However, he acknowledged that this is often the case, or can be the case. He expressed regret over stories he can’t tell at the moment due to their prohibitive costs. As an artist, he emphasized his desire to safeguard animators and involve them in the creative process. He suggested that by reducing some of the grunt work, we can get closer to the art, which would ultimately benefit everyone involved in the long run.
Miller’s insights offer a balanced perspective to the heated debates about AI in storytelling within the entertainment sector. Key points such as integrating AI protections and clauses in contracts for artists and writers were central demands during the prolonged strikes of 2023 by actors and writers unions. Despite achieving protection for their members at the conclusion of these strikes, there remains a great deal of unease in Hollywood about how this technology might affect an industry that is already facing challenges.
Miller, an unusual studio executive, is both a creator and a proponent of ethical AI usage in the entertainment industry – a rarity given that not all studios prioritize ethical AI practices. This could potentially inspire an intriguing episode for the anthology series Love, Death + Robots, exploring the emotional turmoil faced by animators who fear being replaced by AI. If Miller were to direct this episode, it would add another layer of interest to the story.
