As a devoted fan who followed Lucas Coly’s journey since his Vine days, I am utterly heartbroken by the news of his untimely demise. This 27-year-old prodigy, who seamlessly navigated the realms of English and French rap, was more than just a musician to me – he was an embodiment of resilience and passion.
The rap world is in mourning.
It’s sad to report that Lucas Coly, a popular French-American rapper known for his 2016 viral track “I Just Wanna,” passed away at the age of 27, as confirmed by his manager on October 3rd.
I’m deeply saddened to share that my brother has passed away. Please remember to express your love and appreciation to the people you care about now, rather than waiting for a time of loss.
In a separate since-deleted statement, Coly’s manager said there is “a hole in my heart right now.”
In a post on Instagram, as reported by Us Weekly, he expressed that having him as his manager was a significant factor in his decision to stay. He admitted that the reality of Lucas leaving is hard for him to accept because he finds it difficult to believe that he’s actually gone.
A cause of death was not disclosed.
About a decade back, Coly first made a name for himself on the app Vine, as reported by NBC New York. Later, he shared his music in both English and French on YouTube, amassing nearly 500,000 subscribers.
In a 2017 interview with DJ Smallz Eyes, Coly shared that he hails from France but relocated to the United States when he was around eight years old. Often, people are unaware of his fluency in French as he doesn’t openly disclose this fact.
At that moment, he said, “I’m excited to create more music incorporating French. It seems to me this will broaden my reach. I have French fans, of course I do have fans in various other nations, so it’s time for me to return home now.
And for Coly, music was always his No. 1 his passion.
He admitted that his academic performance was poor and this was his primary challenge, looking back on his past. Put simply, he barely managed to graduate from school. However, his true passion lies in rapping. In essence, if it isn’t about music or creating music, he wishes to dedicate himself to nothing else.
Beyond the catchphrase “I Just Wanna”, Coly’s discography encompasses songs like “Feelings” from 2017, “Break Ya Back” and “I Look Better”, which were released in 2018 and 2021 respectively. Last year, he dropped a track called “Know Yo Place.
In the song, he expresses his determination to maintain a clear perspective, suggesting he sees through the deceptions and illusions, which he likens to smoke and mirrors. Furthermore, he acknowledges the opposition he faces but vows not to let it intimidate him in any way.
Just prior to his passing, Coly expressed affection to his 1.3 million followers on Instagram with the message, “I adore each of you.
