According to a report from NBC News, the statement reads, “Regrettably, we’re unable to provide insights on the news stories concerning Luigi Mangione. All we can say is that our knowledge about him comes from what has been published in the press.

The family stated, “We are deeply shaken and saddened by Luigi’s detainment. Our sympathies go out to the Thompson family, and we kindly urge everyone to send their well-wishes to those affected.

On December 9th, Mangione, who allegedly possesses two engineering degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, was apprehended by police at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. This action followed a call made to authorities about a person acting suspiciously, as stated in the criminal complaint obtained by TopMob News.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers inquired about Mangione’s identity, to which he presented a New Jersey identification card identifying himself as Mark Rosario. However, no record was found under that name, prompting the individual to fall silent and start shaking when asked if he had recently visited New York City.

“The male was advised that he was under an official police investigation and if he lied out [sic] his identity, he would get arrested,” the complaint continued. “The male then stated that his name was The Defendant: Luigi Mangione.”

When asked why he lied, Mangione allegedly responded, “I clearly shouldn’t have.”

A person who graduated from an Ivy League university and was reportedly found with an unlicensed gun (referred to as a “ghost gun”) and a silencer on him, is facing charges including forgery, illegal possession of firearms, altering records or identification, using tools intended for criminal activity, and providing false information to law enforcement officials, according to the accusations made in the complaint.

He was later charged in New York with one count of murder, as well as three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of possession of a forged instrument, per online records viewed by NBC News.

Brian Thompson served as CEO at UnitedHealthcare, having initially joined the company back in 2004. He ascended to this position in 2021 following various roles within the organization. Before joining UnitedHealthcare, Thompson had worked for PwC, as per his LinkedIn profile. Notably, he graduated with honors from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting, in May 1997, as confirmed by Steve Schmadeke, the school’s public relations manager, to NBC News.

He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.

6:46 a.m. on Dec. 4, 2024, I was glued to my television as NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny addressed the media about an unfathomable tragedy. A person had been shot right outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, and my heart sank as he detailed the grisly scene.

As per Kenny’s statement, the shooter on foot reached the New York Hilton Midtown prior to Thompson’s arrival, having walked there from a different hotel around 6:44 am for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference. The shooter approached Thompson from behind, fired shots, and then left on foot before hopping onto an ebike, with the gunman being spotted entering Central Park at Center Drive by 6:48 am. During the investigation, authorities found three live nine-millimeter bullets and three empty casings. Interestingly, the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” were written on these shell casings. However, the motive behind Thompson’s killing remains a mystery to investigators. They are currently examining various leads such as Thompson’s social media activity, interviews with colleagues and family members, and are collaborating with law enforcement in Minnesota and Atlanta. Additionally, a phone was found in an alley where the shooter escaped, but it is not yet clear if this phone belonged to the gunman.

During a briefing on December 4th, Kenny described the suspect as a man of lighter complexion, dressed in a light-brown or cream-colored jacket, a black mask, black and white sneakers, and a conspicuous gray backpack. The New York Police Department (NYPD) had earlier shared images of this individual, who was seen brandishing a gun while riding a bicycle.

On December 9th, authorities in Pennsylvania apprehended Luigi Mangione, aged 26, designating him as a person under investigation. He was detained on allegations of forgery, illegal firearm possession without a permit, using instruments for criminal activities, tampering with records or identification documents, and presenting false identification to law enforcement officials, as per a criminal complaint obtained by NBC News.

As police officers encountered Mangione at a McDonald’s, it is claimed that he gave them a counterfeit New Jersey identification card. Upon being inquired about his recent visits to New York, Mangione reportedly began to tremble, as stated in the formal accusation.

The authorities have stated that Mangione is under investigation due to his involvement in several offenses, such as forgery and weapons-related crimes. He was apprehended on December 9th. It’s worth mentioning that he holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from an Ivy League university, which he obtained in 2020, and a Master of Science in the same field from the University of Pennsylvania, as confirmed by NBC News.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny provided further insights into Mangione’s background, explaining that he spent his formative years in Maryland. As per his latest records, his residence is in Honolulu; however, he also maintains ties with San Francisco, according to NBC News reports shared by Kenny.

Upon learning about the tragic shooting, Brian’s family expressed deep sorrow for his loss. In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis on Dec. 5, they described him as a kind-hearted, giving, and talented individual who lived life to the fullest. Thompson’s wife, Paulette, also mentioned that her husband had been given warnings before his passing. She explained to NBC News on the 5th of December that it seemed like a lack of attention was given to these threats, and she wasn’t privy to the specific details. However, she knew that he claimed there were individuals who had been making threatening remarks towards him.
