Madame Web’s Isabela Merced Still “A Little Bit Proud” of Spider-Man Spinoff

As a fan who’s always had a soft spot for films that lean towards the campy side, I can’t help but admire Isabela Merced‘s resilience and grace amidst the less-than-stellar reception of ‘Madame Web’. Having been through my fair share of box office disappointments myself (I mean, who hasn’t had a ‘Flubber’ moment?), I understand her sentiment. It’s disheartening when a project that required so much effort from so many people doesn’t quite hit the mark, but it’s the spirit of camaraderie and shared experiences that truly make these journeys worthwhile.

The response to the Spider-Man spinoff film “Madame Web” was underwhelming, as both viewers and critics expressed dissatisfaction, and the movie’s box office earnings failed to meet expectations. Despite these discouraging reactions, lead actress Isabela Merced remains proud of the project, attributing her positive feelings to the enjoyable filming experience and her personal fondness for movies that lean more towards campiness rather than authenticity. Merced is now set to star in another superhero franchise, appearing in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” production.

Merced expressed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast how fascinating it is that every actor they admire seems to have a movie that they find “so over-the-top,” as she put it. She added that there’s a sense of camaraderie among them, as they all share a similar experience – their group chat was filled with amusing tweets and memes, making for some enjoyable conversations.

She continued, “But at the same time, it does have a sad taste in my mouth, because there were people that worked on it that worked really hard and maybe this was their opportunity to have a big break and I just can’t help but think about those people that put in the work. I’m lucky enough to have other opportunities right now, that’s what I feel really blessed about, but I do feel bad for the other people that put their all into this and, there’s so many cooks in the kitchen, so even though you might mean well, somebody else might not understand the assignment.”

The performer further shared her affection for quirky events, hinting that viewers could find pleasure in the movie, regardless of whether it became a box office hit.

Merced shared her fondness for movies with a unique charm. To be precise, she adores “The Room”, cherishes “Flubber”, and enjoys “Catwoman”. These films are her favorites, and she takes a certain pride in them.

While not all individuals associated with “Madame Web” shared the same warm recollections of the production process, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura offered a slightly more open perspective regarding the film’s reception.

Bonaventura shared with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con that he had no clue whether Madame Web‘s characters would return. He admitted that watching the movie was emotionally tough for him. When asked about how this uncertainty affected him, Bonaventura described it as feeling like a sharp blow to the head.

Stay tuned for updates on the possible future of Madame Web.
