Maeve’s Dark Secret About Eddie

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for episode 9 of MobLand

In Paramount+’s crime drama MobLand, the most intriguing character dynamic lies in the complex bond between Helen Mirren’s character Maeve Harrigan and her grandson Eddie, played by Anson Boon. Each character exhibits disturbing behavior individually, but when Maeve manipulates Eddie as the mastermind behind the conflict between the Harrigans and Stevensons, they become formidable adversaries. Although Eddie demonstrates his own signs of psychopathy, it is Maeve who wields the most power, not just over Eddie, but often over Conrad (and thus, the entire Harrigan criminal empire as well).

In the midst of the Harrigan-Da Souza family feud, Gina Da Souza, Harry’s daughter, found herself stuck at the Harrigans’ mansion. Despite Eddie’s self-absorbed behavior and his feeble attempts to feign sensitivity as a means to attract her, she sought comfort in his embrace. However, in episode 9 of “MobLand”, Maeve expresses her disapproval of Gina being near her grandson, which raises doubts about the true nature of their relationship.

Maeve Warning Gina Away From Eddie Is About Status – And Harry

Maeve Doesn’t Believe Gina Is Worthy Of Her Grandson

It appears that Maeve’s exaggerated sense of self-worth might be fueling her determination to keep Gina from being with Eddie. Maeve, as a matriarch in the Harrigan family, holds an old-fashioned view similar to royalty or nobility, believing that Eddie should be with someone who matches his upbringing, which she has elevated in her mind. Since Gina comes from the ranks of the Harrigans’ employees, she doesn’t meet Maeve’s standards for Eddie’s partner.

Maeve has good reason to keep Harry Da Souza and his daughter, Gina, from getting too close to her grandson since she doesn’t trust Harry at all. Given that Maeve has hinted to Conrad that Harry is a traitor, it follows that she wouldn’t want Gina moving any further into the Harrigans’ inner circle than Harry already is. Both Harry and Gina are intelligent individuals, which makes them exactly the kind of people Maeve would prefer to keep at a distance due to her cunning nature.

There’s Probably More To Maeve & Eddie’s Relationship That We Don’t Know

Something Has Seemed Off Since The Beginning Of MobLand

It’s also possible that there might be a more significant motive behind Maeve’s attempts to keep Gina from Eddie. For instance, the dynamic between them has felt quite unusual since Maeve took out cocaine from her bra to give it to her grandson, especially considering the disclosure that Maeve has orchestrated Eddie’s moves. In episode 9, during dinner, an awkward scene unfolded when Maeve placed her hand on Eddie’s leg while giving advice to Alice about managing men.

It seems the audience might not have all the details about Eddie and Maeve’s relationship. While there may be hints suggesting Maeve has feelings beyond typical grandmotherly affection towards her grandson, these suggestions lack concrete evidence or explanations. Whether it’s a manifestation of Maeve’s instability or something else entirely, their relationship appears to be much more intricate than just a caring grandmother looking after her only grandchild.

Why Did Eddie Tell Conrad About Maeve?

His Fear Likely Outweighs His Loyalty

Episode 9 starts with Conrad entering Eddie’s room as he wakes up, initiating a conversation that takes place off-screen. However, during the mentioned dinner, it becomes clear that Eddie had shared Maeve’s plans with his grandfather, who already harbored doubts. This seems unusual because Maeve has consistently protected Eddie, making it seem odd that he would abandon his strongest supporter so easily, given that Conrad applied a little pressure.

In the short exchange where Eddie questions the dog about who has it tougher, we get a glimpse of his predicament. Much like the dog confined in its pen, Eddie feels imprisoned by his circumstances, sandwiched between his grandmother and grandfather. Although Maeve appears to care for him, it’s possible that his allegiance to her is secondary to his fear of Conrad. Growing up with tales of Conrad “The Dread” “100 Guns” Harrigan, London’s notorious crime boss, he understands that when Conrad issues a command, it takes priority because he knows the consequences if he doesn’t comply.

MobLand Episode 9 Doesn’t Rule Out Eddie Being Conrad’s Son

In Fact, It Might Strengthen The Case For It

In Eddie’s room, when Conrad initially speaks, he refers to Eddie as “son,” a term that might simply be a casual or affectionate way of speaking. However, this could also subtly hint at Eddie’s real identity – he might actually be Conrad’s son with Bella Harrigan. The audience is aware that Conrad had a relationship with Bella before she married Kevin, when she was only 20 and Conrad was over 50. There seems to be a stronger resemblance in personality between Eddie and Conrad than with Kevin, which adds weight to this hypothesis.

In addition to this, episode 9 featured Kevin losing his temper when Alan Rusby, a previous prison guard, brought up Kevin’s child. This is the second time Kevin has lost control, the first being in episode 8 when Maeve referred to Kevin’s “other brother.” The popular assumption is that Eddie Harrigan might not be Kevin’s biological son but Conrad’s, making him the “other brother” that Maeve hinted at, who could potentially inherit the Harrigan empire.

If Eddie is indeed Conrad’s illegitimate child, it seems unusual that Maeve would be so protective towards him instead of hating him like she does Seraphina. However, upon further consideration of Maeve’s actions towards Eddie, the situation becomes clearer. For instance, Maeve prompted Eddie to murder Tommy Stevenson, an action that didn’t benefit anyone except placing his life in peril as Richie Stevenson’s prime target. Additionally, she involved him in her schemes against Conrad, placing him under Conrad’s scrutiny as well.

It appears that there might be more to Maeve’s relationship with Eddie than meets the eye. Instead of genuinely viewing him as her beloved grandson, it seems possible that she is orchestrating a complex scheme against him. By allowing Eddie to maintain his position as Bella and Kevin’s legitimate son, Maeve may have been ensuring his protection up until now. However, this could be part of a larger plan to undermine Eddie in the world they live in, which is often referred to as “MobLand.” Instead of nurturing and supporting Eddie, Maeve might be setting him up for a fall.
