As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the transition from a proprietary engine to Unreal Engine 5 for Mafia: The Old Country is an exciting development. Having grown up playing the original Mafia games, I’ve always been fascinated by their immersive storylines and authentic cityscapes.
For decades, the Mafia series has relied on its unique proprietary engine. However, when Mafia: The Old Country is released in 2025, it will transition to Unreal Engine 5. In a recent conversation with VGC, developer Hangar 13 explained their reasons for this change, and as one would expect, a significant factor was the desire to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities offered by the Epic toolset.
Game Director Alex Cox stated, “Since we switched to Unreal Engine 5, we’ve essentially constructed a new version of our game engine.” This necessitated rebuilding our game technology as well, given that we migrated from our old engine, which was based on the underlying tech used in earlier Mafia games.
In his discussion, Cox emphasized that transitioning to Unreal Engine expands numerous development opportunities for Hangar 13. Furthermore, he highlighted the chance it offered to modernize the series’ systems to meet contemporary generation standards.
He mentioned that Unreal presents a wealth of fresh opportunities, especially in terms of visuals. In his opinion, the game is truly spectacular to look at.
In many aspects, during the redesign of the game, we aimed for it to feel somewhat familiar on your gaming device. Therefore, while you’re playing, we want the game to retain a sense of continuity with past Mafia games, rather than diverging significantly or distracting players from what they anticipate in a Mafia game.
However, upon our return, this rebuilding phase has offered us an opportunity to update and modernize every aspect, aiming to meet the standards of contemporary gaming platforms, such as the “Mafia” game series.
Cox further mentioned that the setting for “Mafia: The Old Country,” specifically Sicily, offers a distinctly unique atmosphere compared to past Mafia series locations, and this change is made even more believable through the powerful capabilities of Unreal Engine 5.
In a Mafia-style game, what we aim to capture is the lively atmosphere of the city, be it New Bordeaux, Empire Bay, or Lost Heaven. We want to convey that bustling city feel effectively.

We aimed to portray the stunning scenery just as you described, and Unreal Engine has been instrumental in achieving that goal.
