Developer Hangar 13 has clarified that Mafia: The Old Country won’t tread the open-world path taken by Mafia 3.
On the official FAQ section of the game’s website, a question is posed as follows: “Is Mafia: The Old Country set in an open environment?
The answer: “No. Mafia: The Old Country is a linear, narrative-driven game.”
Although earlier previews suggested an extensive exploration of the Sicilian landscape in the movie, it seems that the focus will primarily be on the narrative rather than extensive landscape traversal, as indicated by the title “The Old Country.
The storytelling in Mafia 3 was substantial, yet it was frequently interrupted by periods of open-world tasks. This element of the game drew criticism from both critics and players, which is why Hangar 13 chose to create a more streamlined experience for the sequel.
In earlier Mafia games, there were expansive maps where players could drive and explore to a degree, though it might be stretching things to label them as fully-fledged open worlds. It’s plausible that The Old Country may adopt a similar layout during certain stages of the storyline.
