As a dedicated fan of the Mafia series who has spent countless hours navigating the gritty streets of Lost Heaven, Lincoln City, and New Bordeaux, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and intrigue about the upcoming title, Mafia: The Old Country. Having grown accustomed to the freedom offered by open-world games, I was initially taken aback when the developers described it as not quite an open-world game in the “strictest sense.
As a thrilled fan, I couldn’t help but be intrigued when a YouTube ad hinted at the release window for “Mafia: The Old Country.” During The Game Awards, Hangar 13 unveiled this highly anticipated title with some captivating cinematics and gameplay. The undeniable elephant in the room is “Grand Theft Auto 6,” set to launch in Fall 2025. This upcoming release has drawn comparisons to the “Mafia” series since its inception, as it continues a legacy that has captivated gamers for years.
In a recent interview with IGN, game director Alex Cox and Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes explained that the upcoming titles are distinct from one another. Instead of being part of Mafia 3, Baynes described The Old Country as similar to Mafia 1 and 2.
One way to rephrase this in a more natural and easy-to-read manner could be: “I believe the general consensus among fans when describing Mafia 1 and 2 is that they offer a linear adventure set in an immersive world, where you can deviate from the main path to explore, but ultimately the game guides you along the storyline. In other words, using Mafia 1 and 2 as references provides a more accurate depiction than Mafia 3.
Indeed, it’s not exactly a game classified as open-world, at least not in its traditional sense, according to Cox. Baynes further explained, “What I mean by that is you won’t be exploring the vast landscape of a game like ‘Mafia: The Old Country’, engaging in countless side quests or interacting extensively with the world.
We aim for players to immerse themselves in a captivating narrative while traversing a stunningly crafted environment. While you’re free to deviate from the main path and explore various corners of this world, our goal is to guide you through the storyline first. Enjoy the journey as it unfolds!
One thing that really appeals to me about these games is that players often finish them due to their curiosity about the outcome. Similarly, it’s common for this game too. We hope that people will engage and immerse themselves in the entire narrative.
The game isn’t being labeled as “purely linear” because it sounds restrictive, nor is it being called open-world due to its broadness. Instead, it resembles the structure of the first two Mafia games, striking a balance between the two extremes. However, ‘open-world’ can be quite misleading as it carries heavy connotations, and we’ve debated whether or not to use this term extensively. In essence, our answer is both yes and no. I trust this clarifies the situation for you!
In Summer 2025, you can expect the release of “Mafia: The Old Country” on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. This prequel takes us back to 1900s Sicily where Enzo Favara, a laborer seeking a better life, gets entangled with the Don Torrisi family. As you might guess, that means more than just a few illegal activities. Keep an eye out for further updates in the upcoming months!
