Maggot’s Incredible Transformation: From Disrespected to Omega-Level Mutant!

Amongst X-Men enthusiasts, there’s constant debate about which mutants are the best, yet a certain group of X-Men often fail to receive such praise. With hundreds of forgotten X-Men, it can be challenging to remember them all. Regardless of the level of disrespect they’ve faced, few X-Men have endured as much as Japheth, also known as Maggot. Whenever “Worst X-Men” lists are compiled, his name is almost always included. Yet, it seems that the era of Maggot being overlooked may be coming to an end as he now stands alongside Marvel’s Most Powerful Mutant.

Caution: Storm #6 spoilers ahead.

Issue #6 of the comic series, titled “Storm,” is penned by Murewa Ayodele, Luciano Vecchio, Alex Guimaraes, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC’s Travis Lanham. It represents Part 3 of the current crossover event in the X-Men comics series, known as “X-Manhunt.” The plot revolves around Professor Charles Xavier, a former mentor to the X-Men, who has managed to break out from Graymalkin Prison following an urgent call from his daughter, Empress Xandra of the Shi’ar Empire. This situation has caused a split among the X-Men; one faction is determined to apprehend Xavier and return him to prison, while another group is inclined to assist him.

In the context of the story, Maggot becomes relevant as he appears at Storm’s aerial stronghold, which she calls home. Charles Xavier visits this sanctuary to engage with his past pupil and request aid. Graciously, Storm consents to help Xavier, and when Cyclops and his X-Men show up to retrieve their mentor, Maggot too lends a hand during the ensuing conflict. This battle takes place as a result.

Storm upgrades Maggot to an Omega-level mutant

Just before Cyclops and the X-Men appear in the Storm Sanctuary, Storm quickly puts on her Vibranium armor. Although Maggot and Professor Xavier don’t have Vibranium armor, they ready themselves. Prof. Xavier puts on his Cerebro helmet, while Maggot readies his slugs, Eany and Meany. After some conversation, the battle begins. Storm is paired with Cyclops, but Cyclops’ laser blasts prove ineffective against the indomitable Storm.

It seems that Cyclops is either critically injured or close to death, causing Juggernaut to become enraged. In response, he declares “No more holding back,” before tearing Maggot’s right arm off his body. However, Storm remains calm and swiftly evacuates the X-Men from the sanctuary. In an unexpected turn of events, Storm employs her newly acquired cosmic powers to summon the condensed spirit of Eegun from her mouth, which she then feeds to Maggot’s slugs, enabling them to heal Maggot and transform him into “Omega Maggot.

Storm now has cosmic powers

Storm underwent a cosmic transformation upon visiting Latveria and encountering Doctor Doom, also known as Emperor Doom. Much like Maggot, Storm met her end in combat against the spirit Eegun, having breached an agreement to abstain from using her mutant abilities for a week. As Storm nears the threshold of death, she is reunited with her late father who informs her that her time has not yet come and that there’s a greater destiny awaiting her.

Step into the boundless entity called Eternity, who appoints Storm as Eternal Storm’s emissary. This transition enables Storm to restore Maggot, significantly amplifying his capabilities. In Storm #6, we don’t discover the new powers Maggot possesses, but maybe that will unfold in the upcoming issue.
