As a diehard fan of both Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy, I can barely contain my excitement for this upcoming crossover! Growing up with these two incredible franchises has been a significant part of my life, shaping my imagination and fueling countless hours of strategic gameplay.

The eagerly anticipated “Final Fantasy” themed collection is Magic: The Gathering’s newest crossover with the Beyond Universe. Even though the cards won’t be released for several more months, we’ve learned a bit more about what’s in store for us in the near future.

In a preliminary video reveal, Shoichi Ichikawa from Square Enix and Zakeel Gordon, a key figure at Magic: The Gathering, joined forces to share some tantalizing insights into what’s coming up. Although the major aspects are yet to be disclosed, the appearance of characters like Lightning, Tidus, Yuna, and Sephiroth in the video hints that both teams are aiming for something grand in this collaboration.

In the final version of Ichikawa’s project, it has been confirmed that each numbered installment from the Final Fantasy series will be included. This suggests there might be a few exceptions like spin-offs, but the large majority of games within the series are expected to receive attention.

Previously, we’ve briefly introduced some main characters, but Ichikawa additionally announced the participation of Terra, Noctis, and Cloud Strife. It wouldn’t feel like a true Final Fantasy experience without a few more essential elements, and the series producer also hinted at an abundance of summons, creatures, weapons, and (most crucially) Chocobos.

As per Gordon’s statement, this game set is anticipated to be the most extensive compilation of “Final Fantasy” artwork ever assembled in a single title. It boasts a blend of pieces created by artists who have previously worked on “Magic: The Gathering”, iconic illustrations from the Final Fantasy series, and exclusive collaborations specially designed for this crossover event. Some of the artists already involved include Joseph Weston, Wanjie Li, Yuu Fujiki, and Néstor Ossandón Leal, with many more expected to be announced in the future.

At present, we don’t have significantly more information, but the extensive lore of Final Fantasy offers a wealth of sources for inspiration. Abundant worlds such as Spira, Vana’diel, Gaia, and Ixvalis brim with potential. Each location adds depth to the overall narrative tapestry, immersing players in stunning landscapes, poignant story developments, and some of the most intricate, expansive narratives in gaming history.

Popular characters like ViVi Ornitier, Cid, Tifa Lockheart, and Auron were not specifically mentioned, but it seems unlikely that the final version will exclude many mainstays due to their popularity. However, given the limited space available, it’s inevitable that some fan-favorite characters might have to be left behind in this compilation.

Under the “Beyond” label, which has previously brought together worlds from iconic sci-fi and fantasy properties like “Lord of the Rings,” “Doctor Who,” “Warhammer 40,000,” and “Fallout,” Magic: The Gathering now joins forces with Final Fantasy.

Currently, the crossover between MTG and Final Fantasy is planned for a release in June 2025. However, this won’t be the only Universes Beyond set coming out next year. Also confirmed is the start of a multi-year partnership between WotC (Wizards of the Coast) and Marvel Comics, with Marvel’s Spider-Man being the first collaboration in this series.
