Magic: The Gathering’s Live-Action Movie Just Took a Big Step Forward

The writing team for the movie adaptation of “Magic: The Gathering” has been confirmed as Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. On Tuesday, Deadline announced this news, though Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment chose not to comment on the matter. Previously, Gardner and Fitzgerald collaborated with Hasbro on a movie project for “Power Rangers,” which didn’t get produced, as well as an incomplete spinoff of “Aquaman” titled “The Trench.” They are also working on the upcoming sci-fi series “Trancers” for Amazon Prime Video. The exact direction for the live-action “Magic: The Gathering” movie remains uncertain, but with a wealth of material from cards, novels, and connections to other franchises, they have numerous possibilities to explore.

Back in February, Hasbro and Legendary unveiled plans to adapt Magic: The Gathering for both TV and movies, aiming to establish a shared universe. This popular trading card game, known as the first of its kind and one of the most successful by various standards, is published by Wizards of the Coast. It has frequently intertwined with their Dungeons & Dragons franchise, as well as other fantasy properties. As it has developed unique themes over time, these may prove ideal for a screen adaptation.

In this game, participants assume roles as sorcerers known as Planeswalkers, who engage in battles against one another in a contest. Their cards depict spells they are able to cast, along with entities like creatures and artifacts they can bring into the fray to battle on their behalf. The ability to cast spells, or mana, is restricted by the number of Land cards they can utilize, and damage inflicted upon them by their adversary diminishes their “life points.

In essence, the storyline aspects of this game have traditionally been limited to card descriptions and other related text. However, in modern times, Wizards of the Coast has given more importance to the game’s universe and narrative. As a result, they appointed Nic Kelman as Head of Story and Entertainment in 2017 to streamline the game’s lore for continuity and consistency. Additionally, they published the novel “War of the Spark: Ravnica.” The Magic: The Gathering franchise also includes numerous novels, comics, and short stories, but it remains unclear which, if any, could serve as the foundation for Gardner and Fitzgerald’s upcoming movie.

Efforts to translate Magic: The Gathering onto television screens have been widely discussed but haven’t yet resulted in anything tangible – as late as 2019, the Russo brothers announced their intentions for a TV show at San Diego Comic-Con, only for this project to be abandoned later in 2023. Currently, a fresh team of creators is taking up the task at Netflix, but there’s no current timeline set for either the film or series release.
