As a longtime fan who has witnessed Illyana Rasputin’s evolution from a young New Mutant to one of the X-Men’s most formidable members, I am absolutely thrilled about Marvel’s upcoming solo series, “Magik.” With her Soulsword, spells, and dark side in tow, Magik is set to take on mystical threats that are targeting mutantkind. The creative team of writer Ashley Allen and artist Germ?n Peralta has me more than excited for this new chapter in Illyana’s life.
As a seasoned X-Men member and the team’s resident sorceress, it’s time for me, Illyana Rasputin (Magik), to embark on a new phase in my journey. I’m thrilled to lead the charge in an exciting new Marvel series titled after my name, Magik. In this series, I’ll be wielding my Soulsword, casting spells, and facing off against mystical perils that are specifically targeting mutantkind. The Magik series is just one of the many solo titles emerging from the X-Men: From the Ashes era, which also includes titles featuring Wolverine, Storm, Dazzler, Phoenix, Psylocke, Laura Kinney as Wolverine, and Mystique. I can’t wait to bring my unique brand of magic and adventure to the Marvel Universe!
The team behind Magik consists of writer Ashley Allen and artist Germ?n Peralta. Ashley Allen has penned a Magik story in X-Men: Blood Hunt – Magik, which is connected to the recent vampire-focused event series, while Germ?n Peralta is recognized for his recent work on Black Panther and last year’s Loki series. Initially appearing as Colossus’ younger sister and one of the newer members of the New Mutants, Magik has demonstrated her value throughout the years since her debut in 1975’s Giant-Size X-Men #1. Marvel intends to showcase Magik utilizing her mystical abilities and unique mutant magic like never before. Cinephiles will recall that Anya Taylor-Joy portrayed Magik in the long-awaited The New Mutants film.
Magik creative team share their enthusiasm over the X-Men series
Allen expressed great enthusiasm about getting back to writing Illyana. He adores crafting supernatural tales with characters who have pure hearts, and he finds this series particularly delightful because it aligns perfectly with his preferences. He’s eager for readers to embark on the thrilling journey we take Magik on, where she faces off against demons, but also grapples with her own personal growth.
Peralta expressed his enthusiasm about the project: ‘Magik is a captivating character, shrouded in darkness and mystery. Her backstory is intriguing, and I have a particular fondness for Chris Bachalo’s design. I find joy in drawing both action-packed and emotionally intense scenes, and Ashley Allen’s script offers a unique blend of these elements. It’s simply thrilling to imagine Magik wielding her sword against demons!’
Marvel reveals new Darkchylde design for Magik
Artist Germán Peralta has been chosen to create a fresh design for Magik’s demonic persona, Darkchylde. Magik has struggled to keep Darkchylde under control, but in her upcoming X-Men series, Darkchylde will make an explosive comeback like never before. Peralta’s designs show horns growing on Magik’s forehead and her mouth contorting into a fearsome scowl, accompanied by demonic eyes to match.
On Magik, you’ll notice wing-shaped structures resembling bats and a tail extending, plus legs adorned with horned hooves reminiscent of demons. She carries an intimidating aura that will undoubtedly add an element of mystery when she makes her appearance in 2025.
What is Marvel’s Magik series about?
In a captivating solo adventure of her own, the enigmatic mutant Illyana Rasputina embarks on a demon-hunting mission! Accompanied by fresh allies, she confronts sinister forces as an ancient entity stirs beneath the frozen Alaskan land. However, this awakened creature has now entered Magik’s domain!
In the course of the series, Magik will grapple with her sorrowful past while mastering her powerful Darkchylde alter ego. After years of restraint, the Darkchylde persona resurfaces from the depths of her troubled psyche to provide her with increased strength and abilities, but at what potential price?
Magik #1 goes on sale January 8, 2025.
