A peek at a fresh take on the iconic TV detective Maigret has been unveiled, featuring actor Benjamin Wainwright from Belgravia: The Next Chapter taking on the character.
The show’s protagonist is modeled after the Jules Maigret character from Georges Simenon, portraying an unorthodox yet ambitious detective. This character gains prominence as a promising figure ascending through the ranks of the French Judicial Police.
The synopsis provided by PBS Masterpiece offers an enticing glimpse into a vibrant, less frequently depicted Paris. It covers a broad spectrum, from the opulent upper-class environment of grand hotels and lavish mansions to more common local establishments like bistros and bars, as well as the hidden underworld where criminal professionals reside.
Previously, the stories of Maigret were adapted for live-action in a TV series during the 1960s featuring Rupert Davies, and more recently, an ITV production ran for two seasons with Rowan Atkinson portraying the main character.
As an ardent admirer, I’d rephrase it this way: “In my view, Maigret’s primary goal is to untangle the intricacies of our intentions. It’s not his genius or unique techniques that make him successful at this, but rather his keen ear and empathetic nature. He doesn’t crack cases by applying complex methods; instead, he delves deep into understanding people.
In the image shown above, you can see Wainwright dressed in a shirt and jacket, with the iconic Eiffel Tower standing majestically in the backdrop behind him.
In addition to the main cast, Stefanie Martini (“The Gold”), Blake Harrison (“World on Fire”), Reda Elazouar (“Sex Education”), Kerrie Hayes (“The Responder”), Shaniqua Okwok (“The Flatshare”), Rob Kazinsky (“Star Trek: Section 31”) and Nathalie Armin (“Juice”) will also join the production.
As David Stern, joint managing director at Playground production company, I am thrilled to express my heartfelt gratitude to our partners Masterpiece, Banijay, ILP, and John Simenon. George Simenon’s creation of Jules Maigret stands as a timeless icon among great literary detectives, and we are truly honored to have their trust and support as we strive to breathe new life into this cherished character for a global audience.
The as-yet unannounced UK network that will air the show is crafted by Patrick Harbinson, who has previously worked on productions like The Tower, Homeland, and Person of Interest.
