Maika Monroe Leaves Brides, Olivia Cooke Replaces Her in Dracula Thriller

In a minor setback for Neon, Maika Monroe has departed from their upcoming Dracula-inspired thriller titled Brides, directed by Chloe Okuno. Stepping into her role is Olivia Cooke, who currently stars as Alicent Hightower in the popular HBO series House of the Dragon. The film, which was announced towards the end of last year, is the second collaboration between Okuno and Monroe following their 2022 psychological thriller, Watcher.

By the set deadline, Monroe has been removed from the project because of scheduling issues arising from her involvement in the romantic drama titled “Reminders of Him,” which is being helmed by director Vanessa Caswill based on the novel by Colleen Hoover. Cooke steps in to fill Monroe’s role, and undeniably, she’s an excellent choice for the position. Besides working on “House of the Dragon,” Cooke has also graced our screens in “Ready Player One,” “Bates Motel,” and the popular Apple TV+ series, “Slow Horses.

Apart from directing, Okuno is also writing the script for the film titled “Brides“. Drawing vague inspiration from Bram Stoker’s 1887 novel, this period drama appears to reinterpret and reverse the original narrative. The goal is to create a contemporary film that should resonate with modern moviegoers.

1960s Italy serves as the backdrop for the story of Sally Bishop (Cooke) and her husband, who journey to a secluded villa following Sally’s mental breakdown. The villa’s enigmatic owner, Count, exhibits an unusual fascination with Sally. However, his intentions are complicated when Sally’s feminist spirit disrupts his flawless, violent paradise of vampire brides.
