As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the evolution of their cinematic universe since its inception, I must say that the third season of “What If…?” has truly left me spellbound! The final episode, titled “What If… What If?”, was an exhilarating rollercoaster ride that seamlessly blended action, drama, and a profound message about the interconnectedness of all beings in the multiverse.
The introduction of Silver Surfer Jubilee was particularly intriguing, as it hints at potential crossovers between the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, which has been long overdue in my humble opinion. As a comic book aficionado who fondly remembers collecting X-Men comics during the 90s, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of these two iconic teams finally sharing the silver screen together.
The episode was not without its flaws, however. The pacing felt a bit rushed at times, leaving me yearning for more depth and exploration of certain plotlines. But as someone who has patiently waited through delays and changes in studio ownership, I’ve learned to appreciate the journey rather than the destination.
In closing, if you’re a fan of Marvel’s multiversal adventures, I highly recommend giving “What If…?” a watch – just be prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride! And remember, much like the multiverse itself, it’s all about embracing the chaos and enjoying the ride. After all, who needs a roadmap when you’ve got the power cosmic?
The last season of “What If…?” has wrapped up, leaving us with a tantalizing sneak peek at an intriguing new character, Silver Surfer Jubilee. This figure joined a host of other unique variants such as Spider-Man with six arms, Samurai Ghost Rider, Iron Heart Punisher, Wolverine Thanos, and others. Whether this specific version or the assortment of multiverse characters will reappear in future series or films remains to be seen. However, with a confirmed Silver Surfer (Shalla-Bal) for “Fantastic Four: First Steps” and an upcoming “X-Men” movie on the horizon, it’s hard not to ponder if Silver Surfer Jubilee might be hinting at something exciting.
In essence, What If…? exists within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it primarily functions as a standalone series with minimal influence on the overall narrative. Characters from this show haven’t been seen elsewhere, yet their counterparts, such as Captain Carter and Strange Supreme, have made appearances in movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
As a long-time fan of Marvel comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I am always eagerly anticipating the introduction of new characters and storylines that expand upon the rich tapestry of the MCU. From my perspective, the inclusion of Silver Surfer Jubilee in upcoming projects may not only serve as a precursor to the main characters’ on-screen debuts but also hint at an intricate X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover that I have longed for since Marvel Studios regained the rights to these iconic franchises.
This approach is reminiscent of Marvel’s shrewd strategy when they reacquired the X-Men film rights, opting not to rush into production on a new X-Men film but instead gradually paving the way for their eventual appearance in the MCU. Examples such as the “recast” version of Quicksilver played by Evan Peters from Fox’s X-Men films in WandaVision and the appearance of Wolverine’s hangout, Madripoor, in Falcon & The Winter Soldier demonstrate this strategic integration of characters and settings that fans like myself have come to appreciate.
In my opinion, this methodical approach allows Marvel Studios to build anticipation for these iconic characters while seamlessly weaving them into the existing narrative of the MCU. I eagerly look forward to witnessing the unfolding of Silver Surfer Jubilee and any potential X-Men/Fantastic Four connections that may arise as the Multiverse Saga moves closer to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
An Epic But Uneven Conclusion
In this installment, titled “The Question of Questions,” we delve into a moment when a younger Watcher, Uatu, vows to abstain from meddling in the lives of those he monitors and instead merely observe, thus formally assuming his role as a Watcher. Uatu wonders why his duty as a Watcher prevents him from interacting with this world’s inhabitants, but is informed that the rationale will be revealed to him later. In the current timeline, Uatu stands accused of violating this oath and faces execution by fellow Watchers, the Eminence, Incarnate, and Executioner. However, before the sentence can be carried out, Infinity Ultron disrupts the trial, providing an opportunity for Captain Carter, Kahhori, Byrdie, and Storm to save Uatu.
Soon after, Eminence, Incarnate, and Executioner close in on the motley crew of multidimensional champions. However, fortune favors them when Uatu bestows upon the heroes the abilities of a Watcher, putting them at an advantage in the impending conflict. Captain Carter selflessly transports her comrades to Strange Supreme’s domain, where he disables the trio of Watchers. Instead of destroying them, Uatu enlightens them on the significance of observing, emphasizing that they must not only monitor but learn from the multiverse’s inhabitants. The story concludes with Kahhori, Byrdie, and Storm becoming new Watchers alongside Uatu.
As a longtime movie enthusiast who’s been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its inception, I found the final episode of this series to be a thrilling yet somewhat perplexing conclusion. The narrative revolving around Captain Carter was a delightful throughline that connected the dots throughout the entire show, making it a fitting climax for her character arc.
The surprises and emotional resonance packed in were truly rewarding for fans like me who’ve been eagerly anticipating these cosmic escapades. The episode sent a heartfelt message about the importance of every individual within the multiverse, which perfectly aligns with the grandeur of the MCU.
However, I couldn’t help but feel that the story was rushed and left certain narrative and thematic loose ends dangling. With only around 30 minutes to work with, it seemed like a lot was crammed into too little time. But as someone who appreciates the intricacies of storytelling within the MCU, I’m optimistic that some of these plotlines will be addressed in future installments.
In essence, this finale was an exhilarating ride with moments of brilliance and room for improvement, but it left me eagerly awaiting more from the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
