Major Shonen Jump Series Returning After 5 Year Hiatus

A highly popular manga series from Shonen Jump is making its long-awaited return after a gap of five years since it concluded! Over the past year, Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has undergone significant transformations as numerous flagship franchises have reached their conclusion. Renowned series such as My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, Mission: Yozakura Family, and others have wrapped up their tenure in the magazine, paving the way for upcoming stories to possibly fill the void. Remarkably, some of these newcomers are even from creators who previously enjoyed massive success with the publication.

I’ve been observing the vibrant world of manga, and one creator whose work has caught my attention is Taishi Tsutsui. Currently gracing the pages of a magazine with his latest masterpiece, “Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery,” it seems this run has been successful as Taishi prepares to return with another installment of “We Never Learn: Bokuben” on Shueisha’s Jump+ app on April 4th. As noted by @WSJ_manga, this upcoming chapter is being referred to as a “special” edition, leaving us in anticipation about what’s to come. Given the original conclusion of “We Never Learn,” the prospect of a new chapter only heightens our excitement.

We Never Learn: Bokuben Had Shonen Jump’s Best Ending

For three years starting from 2017, the manga titled “We Never Learn: Bokuben” was published weekly in Shueisha’s magazine, but it concluded with an exceptional romantic comedy finale that stands out among all others. Without a doubt, it boasts the best ending ever for a Shonen Jump series. The original creator, Taishi Tsutsui, structured the storyline around five possible love interests for the main character, Nariyuki Yuiga. Instead of having Nariyuki choose one and potentially upsetting the others in the end, Tsutsui opted for an unconventional approach where each heroine ultimately prevailed.

In “We Never Learn: Bokuben”, the creators presented distinct conclusions for each main heroine, revealing potential future relationships for Nariyuki. This allows fans to pick their preferred ending, and each one remains consistent with the main storyline. The narrative design aimed to create multiple endings that catered to specific character arcs for each heroine, making it all the more captivating and leaving room for possible continuations in the future.

What Will This New Chapter Be?

Regarding the upcoming chapter of “We Never Learn: Bokuben,” it’s challenging to foresee its content due to the unique nature of its ending. Since the various endings are considered part of the official story, it seems unlikely that we’ll receive an epilogue post-ending. Instead, this new chapter may serve as a refreshing reintroduction to the series, reminding fans of their affection for this modern classic. Additionally, it might link to Tsutsui’s latest work in some capacity.

At the moment, the manga “Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery” has only 20 chapters published and is currently in an uncertain position within Shonen Jump. It’s unclear at this time whether the series will be canceled or not, but typically, a manga’s future is decided around this point. To boost viewership for a potential new series, there might be a special crossover chapter featuring characters from both series. Fans should stay tuned as there could be a surprising comeback!
